Bit Early But Who Cares. My Team For Round 1

Messages

Out of all the forums and groups im in this is the first time ive posted a 2016 team

Barring Injuries

1 Tuivasa Schek
2 Vatuvai
3 Hurrell
4 Lolohea
5 Wright
6 Robson
7 Johnson
8 Lillyman
9 Luke
10 Matulino
11 Thompson
12 Hoffman
13 Mannering

14 Lueluai
15 Vete
16 Sao
17 Faitala Mariner

Reasons for my selections

Wright over Maumalo becos of his experiance. Plus Cappy loves Wright
Hurrell to get first crack over Kata and Ayshford. Hurrell needs to start the season fit and fresh other wise goodbye Koni. Fusitua for me is 4th string
I have gone Sao on the bench just over Lisone becos i thought last season he had a bigger motor. With the interchange going down i think Sao could play big minutes.
Same with Faitala Mariner on the bench. No need to carry a centre anymore, if Koni needs a break then Thomas to the back row and Mannering or Thompson out to centre.
Robson needs to be paired with SJ. He can take lots of pressure off Johnson in all facets of the game eg kicking playcalling etc

Interesting squad and good rational for your pics.

I will go :

1. RTS
2. lolohea ( has to feature in the side somewhere, would like to see him as a ball playing center eventually, in the interim I'd like to see him and RTS use their combination of passing, footwork, and speed on tackle three running off Isaac Luke when there is a roll on from Manu and an impact forward like Sao taking hit up one and two.

3. Its either Kata for his dummy half running and bollocking hit ups under the new interchange (takes a load of the forwards who under the new rules will get less respite) or I'd be more than happy with Ayshford or Wright here (point of difference from having two like centers in Kata and Hurrell).

4. Hurrell, a little bird tells me he is on notice....his recent lean down in weight and sobering experience of not being chased by either NRL options or Union contracts may finally settle this enigma. Otherwise if Hurrell is not up to spec, fill that position with one of either Ayshford, Wright, or Tui, or Allwood, even Fusitua / and at at a pinch Klokstad... in other words...finally we are flush with genuine center options, and the reason why is thanks to a hit and miss Hurrell. Head office has recruited heavily in Center Wing possibilities.

That to me makes perfect sense (especially the recent addition of the tradesmen Aussies since our edges is where we lose games).

5. Manu

6. Although I'm almost certain this spot has been guaranteed to TL, I'd rather he came off the bench in the fashion he does for the Kiwis in the way Kearney has used he and Luke on field, at the same time to great advantage.

7. Johnson if fit, otherwise TL

,8. Ben M
9. Luke
10. Vete, I think this fellow has earned the right to be a starter, in my ideal world he builds his motor for long minutes, he has a very nice stand in the tackle and offload ability, paired with an experoenced Prop you should get good variation from the attack of Vete.

11. Thompson, one of the best backrowers at the Warriors, unlucky to not make Kiwis this year. Grossly underrated player.

12. Hoffman should play 80 minutes to get our monies worth out of our only Kangaroo, as he ages the emphasis should switch from impact to long grinding minutes.

13. Mannering.....along with his back row counter parts....its about the new interchange rules, long minutes equals more Prop options for an impact bench.

14. TL
15. Sao
16. Lillyman
17. Lisone

If we sign Gavet I would give him the ,17 Jumper ahead of Lisone.

i reckon lillyman needs to have a good 6-8 weeks otherwise he might be surplus to requirements. IMO he is the most under pressure with the reduced interchange

Not so sure on that - given our back row many of the interchanges will be props, and presumably Luke (although I'd like to see him play 80)

I don't think any of the bench middle forwards have shown an ability to play more minutes than Jake

Like your team though - I would def have Tui at centre, and Kata/Hurrell fighting for the other spot depending on who's had the better pre season (guess that really comes down to Konrad)

Ayshford could be a dark horse for coming through as a great centre for us. I know he has been poor for the last few years...but when he was on form for the Tigers he was one of the better centres in the NRL on attack and defence. He has shown consistency at the tigers over a couple of seasons.

We do see often underperforming Aussies come to the Warrios and begin to play better...especially when they come over on small contracts. I put it down to the fact that the warriors genuinely have a nurturing family culture at the club and if you are an aussie down on confidence etc it can be a tonic to bring out the best in you.

If we sign Gavet I hope he's nowhere bloody near the first team. He is nowhere near good enough, not even close IMO. Was a promising player who hasn't produced in first grade - we have lots of promising talent in that position that I would prefer to see get opportunities over a 26yo who has managed 14 NRL appearances, all of them low minutes off the bench.

Only put comments on positions I felt were up for grabs.

RTS
Lolohea - quicker than Fus so takes the wing spot (for now)
Hurrell - starts the season, may or may not be replaced at some point
Fusitua - our best ballplaying outside back at present (with Lolohea)
Vatuvei
Robson - we signed him, may as well use him
Johnson
Lillyman
Luke
Matulino
Hoffman
Thompson
Mannering

Leuluai - use as a bench utility is how we get the best utility from TL at full strength
Vete
Lisone/Sao - whoever handles preseason better
RFM - Henry is likely to be picked over him, but RFM is hard for me to leave out

I'd be dirty if we even considered McQueen. About the last player in the comp we need, a probably overrated back-rower.

I'll go Shaun's route and go my team, and Cappy's team as I guess it:

CAPPY

1. RTS
2. Vatuvei
3. Lolohea
4. Kata
5. Wright
6. Robson
7. SJ
8. Lillyman
9. Luke
10. Matulino
11. Thompson
12. Hoffman
13. Mannering

14. Leuluai
15. Vete
16. Sao
17. Henry

MY TEAM:

1. RTS
2. Vatuvei
3. Hurrell
4. Lolohea
5. Wright
6. Robson
7. SJ
8. Vete
9. Luke
10. Matulino
11. Thompson
12. Hoffman
13. Mannering

14. Henry
15. Lillyman
16. RFM
17. Sao

Lisone didn't show enough in 2015 for mine, let him win his spot back and prove he should be the next prop in the rotation when Lillyman goes (although Moa may get that spot if rumours are true), or if Vete doesn't perform/injuries.

I'm not interested in TL on the bench when we have an 80 min hooker, a guy in Henry who can cover if absolutely necessary (as can Robson) + Henry offers defensive steel if we need it + centre cover.

I didn't really want Wright in there but if the rest of the side is firing it won't matter too much. I didn't want two young blokes over there and I don't rate Ayshford anymore. I still want Fusi to come on and make that position his own but it may not be yet. And Maumalo is a long way away based on this year.

And I want RFM in the side. He's a potential gun. He's exactly the sort of player we should back our systems to make him a bonafide NRL star. If we don't we've failed another player who could go elsewhere and kill it.

Totally agree on McQueen. Apparently he's asking big money too. I'm guessing he ends up at the Titans - they're good at spending significant sum on overrated players (and the Tigers can't anymore).

Disagree on TL though.. he doesn't have to play huge minutes, could cover a couple of other positions and Kiwis look great when Luke/TL play a rotation, and to be quite frank the interchange reduction doesn't affect us at all - we have 3 80-minute internationals (wait, did Bodene actually debut? eh, close enough) in the forward pack (not including hooker), plus another 3 guys I'd be comfortable playing 60-65 minutes. Oh, and I'd rate TL as a better provider of "defensive steel" than Henry (at the very least his equal). In any position (the other backrow-type likely underused bench forward - like Henry or RFM - can cover centre).

Yeah there's no need to have 2 back-rowers on the bench when pretty much everyone from 10-13 can cover second row plus one of either RFM or Ben Henry. Just my opinion though.

Overall I think you'll be in the top 5/6 fighting it out with Melbourne/Brisbane/NQ/Manly & Roosters. Fantastic 1/7 & 9, decent bench, improved backline depth (although 1 more strike centre like Hiku wouldn't hurt) and as always a big, mobile forward pack It'll be a huge disappointment if you miss the 8. Then again you are the Warriors

Also my 9's team would be
RTS
Fusitua
Ayshford
Hurrell
Lolohea
Johnson
Henry
Gubb
Luke
