Blaming the Ref Syndrome

The standard of refereeing is terrible, no doubt, but the whinging from fans is off the scale. It’s not unique to rugby league though, check out any NFL forum and see what they say about how Mahomes and the Chiefs are reffed.

I’ll give Raiders fans a pass for whinging, the six again call in the 2019 GF might not have decided the game, but it was amateur hour clown stuff. Embarrassing for the game.

There don’t seem to be many Broncos fans on here blowing up about the refs. Someone will no doubt say that’s because they ‘get all the calls’.

mate, just go and have a look at social media from the past weekend. They're all complaining about Walsh being offside. The still shots with lines drawn on them are particularly amusing

As a Warriors fan, I'm surprised we haven't been mentioned yet this thread as historical ref whingers hah!

I just think in general every team has fans that think they are the most hard done by with ref decisions, and oftentimes it certainly feels that way, but we are after all one-eyed and biased when it comes to things that go against our teams.

Hearing this topic come up last week on the Voss & Brandy podcast/radio show, where a Roosters fan claimed they must be top of the list for most penalised/six-again'd team in the NRL, and when they found those stats turned out they weren't in the top 5 (neither were the Warriors - I think Doggies were #1 in that area).

In conclusion, f@#$ the refs but they aren't always the reason we lose hah! :p

Oh yes offcourse It was a manufactured result, seriously the final penalty count was 10-2 that close to living with out sin.
Don't want to keep harping on about my team (which I am completely 2-eyed about i.e. one red and one green) but that's the same penalty count (10-2) we endured last Saturday night against the Sharks - not to mention the 4-1 ruck infringement count as well.

Just sayin'...

Notice the NRL quietly got rid of the 2 ref system during the covid period which started the year after that monumental f**k-up? They could've brought it back once restrictions were lifted, but decided not to. I wonder why?

The same as the old "The ref cost us the game" mantra, is the coach bashing that goes on constantly.

Was the coach on the field playing? NO! How in hell did the coach DIRECTLY contribute to his team's loss? Unless you take into consideration selection and player rotation, NO other factors impact on a team's performance. Coaches aren't responsible for missed tackles, forward passes or knock ons!

The last captain-coach I can remember is Wally Lewis for the Gold Coast Crushers in the twilight of his career.

There ya go!

Refs have always copped it, they're the pantomime villain of the piece and it's always been that way. That won't change. That said, I do think refereeing standards are quite poor, certainly here in the UK but watching the NRL, too. In the NRL its messy, convoluted and the mixture of all the people lead to all sorts of different interpretations and subsequently, error after error.

There is an entire NBA fanbase that believes that SGA and the Thunder only won the Championship because of refereeing. (see Shane Gillis joke at the Espys)

Maybe the "standard" of officiating is terrible in the NRL (I believe I've heard that every year since I was old enough to remember), but is the reality of 24hr sports channels, high definition cameras, super slow mo more to do with this perception than anything else?

I am sick and tired of rugby league fans constantly defaulting to the ref as to why their team loses games. Here is a fact.......the vast majority of times, your team's players are by far the biggest factor when your team wins or loses a game. Sure, there are the very odd games where the ref has cost a team a win.......but it doesn't happen anywhere near as often as fans carry on about.
I particularly get the shits when a team gets flogged, their fans choose to pick on a decision or two for why their team lost a game. Good teams tend to play past bad calls, shit teams tend to be buried by them.
This sort of whinging is growing by the year.

It was pretty bad but SGA foul baiting is the main culprit.

Reece Walsh is the SGA of the NRL. The diving king. I laughed at the fake anguished look on his face during the Parra game when he was tackled by 3 defenders.

Warriors fans can complain. Watching thier games as a neutral they get screwed over time and time again.

True. Possibly only NQ in the same bracket but I watch more NZ games- they get shafted.

There are some off the record discussions from #9 executives about who they give a crap about and why... suffice to say NZ are taken for granted at best and other small market clubs have been told they can wither and die... (pre Vlandys regime)
