Board Denies Knives are out for Sheens

TIM Sheens turns philosophical when the question about knives in the Wests Tigers' board room rolls around.
With the Tigers fighting to make the finals for the fourth time since sweeping to premiership glory in 2005, the NRL's longest-serving coach is again in the firing line.
"I love not to have full support of the board. Full support of the board is the death knell,'' Sheens said. "If you're trying to keep everyone happy then you're going to be in a bit of trouble. I can't keep every player happy, I can't keep every board member happy, nor can I keep every supporter happy."
"You live and die by your results and your efforts but I think sometimes results tend to take precedence over effort. The effort needs to be considered, too.''
Four premierships on your CV isn't a bad sell ing point, either. And the same goes for the highest office in rugby league, coach of the Kangaroos.
But the rumblings about discontent and division in the Tigers' board room simply won't go away and chairman Kevin Hammond has confirmed the club will undergo a review at the end of the year.
Three wins in a row has eased some of the mid-season calls for Sheens's head. But tomorrow's clash against premiers Manly at the SFS will be the real measuring stick of where the Tigers are at.
"At the end of the season the board will sit down and review everything and look at where things might have gone wrong,'' Hammond said.
"Everybody and everything comes under review. The players, the coaching staff, the whole operation comes under review. There's not a set of steak knives out there on the table waiting for Tim but obviously questions will be asked at the end of the year."
"Like any business, you've got to review your performance and that's not just financially but what happens on the field, too.''
Humphreys attended his first Tigers board meeting last Thursday and insists Sheens will see out his current deal.

So how do you make the coach accountable when you have clearly and publicly stated that he won't lose his job?

Is there any real point though, there's no pressure on the coach, he's just been told he'll see out his contract.

Why bother?

The review at seasons end - just in time to make an offer to extend Teflons contract for a further 3 years.

Look at his results- no , not the position on the ladder we poor moronic fools, look at the effort- wonderful............... what do we know??????????????

Can you see all the excuses being prepared for rollout? Also, imagine the penetrating questions......... oh well, why should we expect anything different from the WT Board- when they shafted Longmuir we all knew where this was heading. Accountable Tim- what a joke.

Yeah I liked Tim's line:

"You live and die by your results and your efforts but I think sometimes results tend to take precedence over effort. The effort needs to be considered, too.''

Ultimately, if all the effort is there but the results aren't coming then surely there's a problem with execution, which falls squarely on the coach's shoulders.

what an imbecile.

Madunit- careful, you question the great one, the WT mentor and magnificent judge of players (choke, choke)......... The WT thought police will attack us as doubters & heretics again.

OK - I'll bit - Ron..........

Tiges played well for the first half today - really well.

They played crap in the second and let a game that should have been a 40 point win turn into a narrow 1 point win.

The fact that they CAN play like that sometimes and not others comes down to the coach - does it not?

These guys know how to play - its only his job to have them playing at their full potential. If we played that all season we would be very close to the top of the ladder.

Let's make it you, for being such a goose. Then after awhile we can get back to talking about the footy...

I'm pleased with how it went tonight. If we'd had an easy win it would have been like the Cowboys game of '08 (or was it '07?) all over again - given us too much false confidence. If we'd lost we'd be goners. The near loss from an 18-0 half time lead keeps us alive, but lets us know we are no shoe ins for the run home...

The fact that the Roosters have started to play again worries me a little... Will it be the Sharks turn to revisit some form next week? This season might still have a few twists and turns in it...

To be honest, Sheens doesn't deserve the sack after a season like this imo. 2 points off the 8 after some absurdly close losses.

Sure we've had some close wins too, but a match like today, we lead the match from start to finish.

We have gone close but missed out for 3 years. I think the Morris experiment at 6 went 2 years too long, the Marshall experiment at 7 went half a season too long. For the most part, recruitment during this period was attrocious. I think these errors had a large impact on our success or lack thereof, and the coach must take responsibility.
