The aim is to dislodge the ball in any way possible, not to injure them. Same with league, the aim of a big shot is to possible dislodge the ball for a knock on, our intimidate them, not to injure.

interesting questions in a NFL.com chat with the executive VP of football operations, about player safety.

(for full chat) LINK:

one of the question/answer which i think applys to The bloke who hit boldin.

Q:
When looking over film of "illegal" hits, what is the most important thing you look for in a collision?

A:
Primarily if the result is helmet to helmet, because that is one of the most devastating hits on players. If the technique is illegal, and helmet to helmet is the result, we consider the player strictly liable. Intent is not relevant.

and fair enough as well.

helmets are obviously hard but the dont insulate any sort of hit.

NFL could be played without pads and a helmet, i don't know why it isn't done....

playing at the line of scrimmage, it is essential to wear a helmet. Alot of the first contact between interior lineman is with the helmet.
