Bombers Brilliant Science Activity

Good morning class, and its good to see so many of you turn up.

Our first (and only) activity today will be to help the teacher catch up on some areas that urgently need rectifying. We will be doing an activity on classification, and I require two volunteers to come forward and help.

Before you jump out of your seats with excitement, this is what I need you to do. Listen closely, because I will not say it again.

Open up your science notebook (i.e. 'reply to topic') and answer the following questions:

1. What is the object in the picture?
2. Is it living or not-living?
3. Why? Explain your reasons - the more elaborate and detailed, the better.

Remember, class, I'm not really looking to see if your answers are right or wrong. Rather, it is the reasoning behind your answers that I am looking for.

Anyone who doesn't do the activity will be put on lunchtime detention ;)

Now, the pictures should follow, as soon as I can get the overhead projector (i.e. 'attachments') to work properly!

Thank you class. Now work quitely.

Not sure what exactly you are after but here goes:

Picture 1

1. The object in the picture is a cow.
2. It is living.
3. I presume it is living because it is depicted as standing upright and from my previous experience most cows that are standing upright are living.

Picture 2

1. Am unsure on what the object is in the picture but presume it to be grass.
2. If it were grass then I would also presume it to be living.
3. The reason i would presume it to be living is because if it is grass it is also standing up and looks like it is coming out of the ground.

Picture 3

1. the object depicted in the picture is a spider.
2. From this picture I cannot determine whether it is living or not.
3. The reason I can't determine whether it is living or not is because dead spiders are often posed this way for display and the picture lacks enough detail to determine it's livingness or not.

Picture 4

1. the object depicted in the picture is a whale.
2. the whale in the picture looks living.
3. the reason I think the whale in the picture looks living is because it looks to me like there is some kind of motion portrayed in the picture. If the whale is moving then it is probably alive.

Picture 5

1. I am not sure what the object is in picture 5. If i were to guess it would be a worm only because all the other pictures are of animals and that is the animal that most closely resembles the object in picture 5
2. If it were a worm I could not say whether it was living or not.
3. The reaon I can't tell is because the picture lacks enough detail and also lacks a contextual background of the object. The would be the same in picture 3 with the spider.

Picture 6

1. The object in the picture is a boy
2. He looks to be living.
3. The reason I think he is living is because he is standing upright and appears to be smiling. People who are smiling are usually living.

Hey! Enough talking at the back of the classroom

JoeD, I can't give you a sticker until you finish the second half of the activity. Otherwise, the back oval is looking pretty messy, I might get you to clean it up.

OK Bomber my answer is pretty simple.

1. The objects in the pictures are lines. Some contain more than others with varying degrees of length and shape.

2. None are living

3. Because they are lines that have been put together to try and look like various living and dead things.

I'm not being lazy, that's just the way I see it after reading your questions.

1.
1. A Cow, or a statue of a cow.
2. It's probably living.
3. It's standing up. Cows stand up when they're alive. They fall over when they are dead (or when they are tipped over by drunk students) Of course it may be a stuffed dead cow, or a statue of a cow, but seeing as there a hundreds (if not thousands of living cows in the world for every stuffed cow or cow statue, that's unlikely.

2.
1. A plant, probably grass or flax.
2. Can't tell.
3. The picture isn't in colour. If it was and was green I'd say it was alive. If it was brown it'd probably be dead.

3.
1. A spider, or model spider.
2. Can't tell.
3. It might be dead, or fake. Can't tell from the picture.

4.
1. A whale, or model whale.
2. Probably alive, unless it's a model.
3. There aren't many dead whales lying around. Of course it could be a model whale.

5.
1. Some sort of primitive worm, or a squiggly line.
2.can't tell
3. not enough detail.

6.
1. A small boy, with a large tumour or goitre on his neck.
2. Living, but I'd only give him six months if it's malignant.
3: If he was dead he'd fall over. Waxworks or shop dummies don't generally have tumours or goitres, so I'm ruling that possibility out..

1/ A small kangaroo or wallaby
It is living
it is a mammal which seems to be consious, and therefore breathing etc, which is the condition we call life.

2/ 3 Clouds
They are not living
because clouds are suspended water particals, not living things

3/ A tree
It is living
Trees are organisms which use oxygen to function and regenerate, and therefore living things

4/ A bicycle
it is not living
a bicycle is a productmade from metal and rubber, which are not living things

5/ a fire
it is not living
a fire is a chemical reaction whichrequires oxygen, but it does not use the oxygen to produce new life or regenerate in any way, so it isnot a living thing

6/ an ice cream in a cone
it is not living
it is made of plant and animal products, but these products are no longer alive

7 a computer
it is not living
a computer is a manufactured object, made of metal and plastic, which are not living things

8 the sun
it is not living
the sun is a huge ball of matter undergoing a chemical reaction that is releasing energy, not regenerating, so it is not a living thing.
