THE TAB is refusing to pay out on the Greg Inglis penalty try in Saturday night's Rabbitohs-Raiders semi-final.
The betting agency was inundated with complaints by punters yesterday who unsuccessfully tried to collect what they thought were winnings.
In a promotional bet broadcast on Channel 9 at half time, punters were offered $3.50 if either fullback Inglis or Josh Dugan scored in the second half.
Punters had also unloaded on Inglis as $8 first try-scorer in a promotion where the bet is refunded if he scores at any stage of the game. Thousands of dollars were invested on both betting markets.
In the 64th minute, the Rabbitohs and Inglis were awarded a penalty try when he was ruled to have been tackled without the ball. Channel 9 even put up "Greg Inglis try" on the screen.
TAB's Glenn Munsie last night defended the decision not to pay out.
"A penalty try is a penalty try," Munsie said. "There is a betting option where you can back a penalty try. For statistical reasons, a player's name is recorded because it has to be assigned to a player."
Munsie refused to reveal how much money the TAB "saved" by not paying out on Inglis. Considering the fullback was the favourite in first try markets, industry sources suggest it was over $100,000.
Munsie, who was spruiking the promotional bets in TAB advertising in the build-up to the game on radio and TV, insists the decision not to pay was not to save money.
"We have rules and processes we have to abide by," he said.
"It's not about ripping anyone off. Without punters we don't have a business. This isn't about the money. You bet on what actually happens and this was a penalty try."
they should pay up... a try is a try.. !!!
