THE TAB is refusing to pay out on the Greg Inglis penalty try in Saturday night's Rabbitohs-Raiders semi-final.

The betting agency was inundated with complaints by punters yesterday who unsuccessfully tried to collect what they thought were winnings.

In a promotional bet broadcast on Channel 9 at half time, punters were offered $3.50 if either fullback Inglis or Josh Dugan scored in the second half.

Punters had also unloaded on Inglis as $8 first try-scorer in a promotion where the bet is refunded if he scores at any stage of the game. Thousands of dollars were invested on both betting markets.

In the 64th minute, the Rabbitohs and Inglis were awarded a penalty try when he was ruled to have been tackled without the ball. Channel 9 even put up "Greg Inglis try" on the screen.

TAB's Glenn Munsie last night defended the decision not to pay out.

"A penalty try is a penalty try," Munsie said. "There is a betting option where you can back a penalty try. For statistical reasons, a player's name is recorded because it has to be assigned to a player."

Munsie refused to reveal how much money the TAB "saved" by not paying out on Inglis. Considering the fullback was the favourite in first try markets, industry sources suggest it was over $100,000.

Munsie, who was spruiking the promotional bets in TAB advertising in the build-up to the game on radio and TV, insists the decision not to pay was not to save money.

"We have rules and processes we have to abide by," he said.

"It's not about ripping anyone off. Without punters we don't have a business. This isn't about the money. You bet on what actually happens and this was a penalty t
ry."

they should pay up... a try is a try.. !!!

Pretty obvious really, must be a pretty amateur punter to expect a payout from that.

A penalty try is what it is, the try doesn't get awarded to Inglis. And don't betting agencies offer first and last scoring options on a penalty try just to cover all bases?

Incorrect. The Penalty Try is awarded to the player who was going to score, in this case Greg Inglis. This isn't Rugby Union.

Just to be sure, I went and checked NRL.com, and was surprised to see they've credited Inglis with the try :?.

Surely that doesn't go down in the record books as a try to Inglis?

Yes it does. Just like every other penalty try.

IN a huge victory for punters, the TAB is set to refund thousands of dollars of bets on the Greg Inglis penalty try in Saturday night's Raiders-Rabbitohs semi-final.
The Daily Telegraph revealed this morning the betting agency was inundated with complaints by punters yesterday who unsuccessfully tried to collect what they thought were winnings.
In a promotional bet broadcast on Channel Nine at half-time, punters were offered $3.50 if either fullback Inglis or Josh Dugan scored in the second-half.
Punters had also unloaded on Inglis as $8 first try-scorer in a promotion where the bet is refunded if he scores at any stage of the game.
TAB executives met this morning to discuss reversing the decision and have taken legal advice.
Source have told the Telegraph online punters are likely to at least get refunds as an act of goodwill.

Thousands of dollars were invested on Inglis in betting markets.
In the 64th minute, the Rabbitohs and Inglis were awarded a penalty try when he was ruled to have been tackled without the ball.
Channel Nine even put up "Greg Inglis try" on the screen.
The TAB’s Glenn Munsie originally defended the decision not to pay out.
"A penalty try is a penalty try," Munsie said.
"There is a betting option where you can back a penalty try.
"For statistical reasons, a player’s name is recorded because it has to be assigned to a player."
Munsie refused to reveal how much money the TAB "saved" by not paying out on Inglis.
Considering the champion fullback was the favourite in first try markets, industry sources suggest it was over $100,000.
The TAB have offered promotional bets throughout the finals series to match offers from corporate bookmakers in what has become a highly competitive battle for the punters' dollar

He already has plenty of asterisk's next to his name in the record books. What's one more?

Yes, a Penalty Try is credited, not a regular try. Otherwise these punters who feel they are owed payouts would have a case.

It does matter if the try only gets credited to Inglis as a penalty try.

Could an expert on the rules please help clear this up? Will the penalty try on Saturday be attributed to Inglis as a normal try? Ie. if he had 80 career tries before the game does he now have 81 career tries?

does no matter...

a try is a try....

they are wrong thats why they are refunding the money,,,,

If they were wrong they would be paying out on the bets, not just refunding. The try should be awarded as a penalty try - Channel 9 (and the NRL it would seem)just attributed it to Inglis as a regular try. That's who is wrong.
