Borgias, the

Looked a few pages back, didn't see a thread.

Another in a long list of American cable television shows endeavouring to make the movie format obsolete.

The show is set in the something-hundreds (gunpowder is relatively new) around super power family the Borgias and concerns their political dealings within Rome and the church.

It's somewhat underplayed and subdued compared to the compelling nature of Breaking Bad or GOT, but on this front it is getting better, season 2 is interesting throughout whereas Season 1 drags in the middle. Even so it has never really reached the same heights as some of the others around.

The strength of the show is the cast, the main lead is Jeremy Irons which should speak for itself and the other two leads (his eldest son and daughter) have equally fantastic screen presence. Then there's a wealth of other characters, from noble whores to French Kings who are also awesome to watch. This is the strongest cast of any show I've seen and I can't think of one bad performance.

There's sex and violence, even homo sex (more "hey lets make the manliest character a homo, that'll totally piss off all those homo haters hahaha" bullshit) and a room full of stuffed corpses, but still the show pulls its punches somewhat compared to others.

It looks amazing, I know nothing of their budget or anything but this is the best looking show I've seen, whereas GOT's armies look like they've dragged the local pub out onto a field the alleged 25k army in the Borgias effortlessly looks 25k.

In short, give it a go, if Season 1 bores you try skipping straight to season 2 (there's 2 seasons so far).
