RICKY STUART MAY BE NAMED SHARKS COACH ON TUESDAY
September 25, 2006 - 6:24PM
The worst kept secret in NRL circles could be confirmed as early as on Tuesday with Ricky Stuart poised to take over as coach of Cronulla.
The Sharks board will meet on Monday night to consider the vacant coaching position following last week's axing of Stuart Raper.
Stuart, the former Sydney Roosters mentor, is heavily tipped to get the nod after formally meeting with Sharks chairman Barry Pierce at the weekend.
Sharks assistant coach Adrian Lam, currently in Papua New Guinea preparing the Kumuls for Saturday's match with the Prime Minister's XIII, spoke to Pierce and club chief executive Greg Pierce over the phone on Monday to put forward his case for the top job.
Former Great Britain and St George coach David Waite, the director of football for French Super League club Les Catalans this season, is also understood to have spoken to the clubs' bosses about the position.
Current Britain coach Brian Noble, and former New Zealand and Queensland mentor Graham Lowe are also believed to have applied for the position.
But Stuart, who was dumped by the Roosters four weeks ago despite leading the club to a premiership in 2002 and another two grand finals in 2003 and 2004, is expected to be appointed to the post.
Stuart, the current Australian Test coach, was replaced by former Sharks coach Chris Anderson at the Roosters last week.
Cronulla, the only NRL club still without a coach for next year, will be the seventh team to appoint a new coach for the 2007 season.
Newcastle, Parramatta, Canberra, Penrith and South Sydney have all changed their head coaches for next year.
