Cowboys show interest in Gibb
NUNDAH: Rugged Norths backrower Brendon Gibb showed a National Rugby League call-up might not be far away with a superb showing in Sundays grand final.
Gibb, who has attracted interest from the Cowboys, was a shining light for Norths despite the 30-20 loss and surely must have turned the heads of NRL scouts.
In defence and attack he stood tall.
The superb display capped an outstanding season for the former under-20 Brisbane Bronco, who played in the inaugural National Youth Competition grand final against Canberra in 2008.
On Sunday he pulled off a remarkable try-saving tackle on Pride fullback Chey Bird, scored the Devils opening try and produced a neat right-arm off-load to put winger Gideon Mzembe over in the second half.
Gibb, five-eighth Shane Perry, centre Jack Reed and captain Mark Leafa were all outstanding.
But despite his personal performance, the 21-year-old Gibb was gutted after the match.
``I wanted it so bad, he said. ``It just wasnt meant to be. So many quality players, everyone deserved it, really deserved it.
``We fought back hard but we gave them too much of a head start.
``We had to have a bit of pride in our jersey, we didnt want to be embarrassing. Weve put in too much effort to be embarrassed out here so we had to have a dig.
Gibb said he hadnt had much interest from NRL clubs but was hopeful his chance would come.
However if it didnt, he was more than happy to stay at Bishop Park.
``Ive always got hope NRL is in my future, he said.
``(North Queensland) Cowboys have probably showed most positive interest at the moment but Ill take it as it comes.
``Hopefully we all stick around next year.
``We definitely want to stick together. Weve got to have that loyalty.
Norths chief executive Mark Murray said Gibbs grand final effort completed a season in which ``he hasnt played a bad game.
