Please grow up and cease any hate messages to the Melbourne Players.

Does anybody here actually think that the players had anything to do with cheating the cap?

They are just the soldiers, if you have anger or whatever direct it at the generals behind their oak desk, on their leather chairs puffing their Cuban cigars....

Yes, that is a possibility. If a player's income exceeds his NRL contract price or if his income comes from the club and an obscure unrelated source, then he's up to his eyeballs in it.

Tax returns will be highly relevant here. If player x was paid 300k, the storm registered him with nrl at 200k, which income did he declare?

If the lower, he must have been in on it.

If he paid tax on the higher amount, it might suggest he didnt know the storm were lying to the nrl. This is conceivable. However, if that is the case, the bigger point would be the Auditors have massively dropped the ball. This could have been picked up from the minute there was any discrepancy between a players tax return and his stated club contract.

Exactly!!

They have to sign a contract to register with the NRL, if they were getting paid more they would have either had to sign a second piece of paper (which should set the alarm bells ringing) or they were just getting extra money into their accounts.

The players receiving the extra money HAD to know (just like at the Bulldogs), how could they not? The contract they sign to register with the NRL would have been LESS than what they were actually getting paid!!

i don't think the NRL is allowed to look at player's personal documents (accounts, tax records etc) - that is why the NRL salary cap is more easily rorted than other sports

i doubt they'd ever be able to make anything stick on a player - fortunately for the players its relatively easy for alot of them to play dumb

to be honest I reckon there'd be many players who have no clue how much money is coming in - they'd leave it to their managers and trust they are doing the right thing .... I would bet their managers would probably setting up some tax avoidance schemes for them, so they may not even have a bank account that they see their money go into like the average joe bloe

I think its very believable that they may not know what's going on .... doesn't make me feel for them tho  - sufffferrrrrr!

It's as simple as writing to a player when his contract has been registered, saying "we have registered your contract with x club, the details of which are as follows......"

If the amount involved is different to what the player believes he is getting, the onus is on him to say something.

It would be no more or less than prudent business practice for the NRL to do this in the current environment, and I would be astonished if they didn't.

Regardless, you are responsible for anything you sign. I understand that they are all pretty dumb and let their managers take control but i hope this is a lesson if they truly didn't know and let other people do it for them they should be made an example of imo.....

We in the normal world have to take responsibility, so they should too imo.....

Strides that may be right about the nrl no having access to returns. That won't help players though if the ATO conduct investigations.

Expect significant pressure from the nrl to be able to inspect them from now on...

The players might not know exactly.

He could have been told, here is your salary and then you will get third party payments paid separately. Just sign here, here and here.

We will handle the rest with the NRL.

Cheers

And more than likely he heard that from his manager not the club, making it even more unlikely the player knew what was going on. Players pay managers to negotiate these deals completely so they don't have to worry about it.

hmmm...well maybe you should shut your trap as there is no way for us to know at this stage whether any players had knowledge or suspicion over these past 5 years of deceit. Im willing to bet that a few knew OR at least had some suspicion, how could you not be suspicious when you get paid one amount to your bank account and a little on the side in a discrete brown paper bag.

the gun players at the storm would have all known so dont kid yourselves..and as JT said on fox sports today,as a coach he knew when coaching parra and souths how much was in the kitty for players wages going forward, and who he could keep/buy/let go.IMO they all knew what was going on.

I think we will find out eventually if they knew or not. I really hope they were in on it as I would love to see certain members of that team discraced however for now will give them benefit of the doubt. My opinion is Bellamy knew for sure , only a complete moron would think that the club could give him all those troops to use and still be under. After all its the coaches who decide a players worth and "apparently" he is one of the best.

Interesting to see Ozzie's comments in this mornings Telecrap (page 42, Mr Twizzle) that we are paying $50k of his salary for 2010 and 2011. Apparently he is part of our second tier cap.

That hurts ....
