BRIAN SMITH POST MATCH MEDIA CONFERENCE - ROUND 1
12 March 2005
Eels 28 def Tigers 12

Q - BRIAN BEFORE THE GAME THERE WAS A LOT OF TALK AS TO HOW LONG IT WOULD TAKE THE TEAM TO GEL - IT SEEMED IT TOOK ABOUT 40 MINUTES?
A - Defensively that is probably fair comment. Our resident stats man tells me that it is in fact 44 games since we did not concede a try in the second half - it was back in 2003 against the Warriors. It is some effort, and it is not easy to do in today's footy, especially when you make the errors we did. Thankfully the opposition did the same.

Q - HOW DID YOU THINK YOUR NEW HALFBACK WENT?
A - I thought Tim did very well - he sterred us around well. I would like to see him perform in a game where we play with a little more control and don;t have the kind of upsets we did today - losing Wade McKinnon made us reshuffle and Glenn Morrision ended up playing in the centres - it has certainly been a while for him out there. Tim did a really good job and with different circumstances and with some experience he will continue to get better.

Q - DID YOU HAVE ANY NERVES AS TO HOW HE WOULD GO?
A - No. I had enough nerves for myself doing my own job. To be fair, and I've said this to Tim, he has been very lucky in that most people come into first grade midway through the season and have 2 or 3 sessions with the big boys - well Tim has had 3 months admittedly it is not game time but he has had a lot of time to get used to it and the boys have had tiime to get used to him - I thought he showed the benfit of that.

Q - GLENN SCORED A GREAT TRY JUST BEFORE THE BREAK AND WAS YOUR BEST TODAY?
A - My word - Morro is just in great form at the moment. I think he feels comfortable here and we ffeel comfortable having him here. Fromt he first trial his form has been great and it just continues.

Q - OVERALL YOU MUST BE HAPPY WIT THE PERFORMANCE?
A - Yes. There are certianly lots of things to work on. I don;t think it was an overall attractive game - being close made it exciting - I think it was more that individuals made errors ofr discipline in regards to when to pass etc - I am not so sure it was teamwork but if we are all doing our jobs we will continue to get better.

Q - YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE ENGLISDH REFEREE?
A - I think those comments best remain private

Q - IT WAS IMPORTANT TO GET OFF TO A GOOD START COMPARED TO LAST YEAR?
A - Yes - we took a vote before the game and we decided unanimously to go for a win.

Q - WHAT IS THE LATEST ON WADE McKINNON?
A - He's no good - there is damage to his hamstring - we don't know quite how bad just yet but it does appear bad. It is rotten luck for him because he was having a great game - McKinnon is just killing them at the moment - I want some of what he's on! Just for your information Mick Vella is now out of hospital and came to training yesterday - he is exactly where he and the docvtors said he would be at this stage

Dosent look too good in regards of Mickinnon

Re Morrison. I remember hearing an interview with him on 2GB I think it was last season. They were talking about him wanting to come to Sydney because of family etc etc.

Smithys comments about him feeling comfortable here would indicate that he is more than happy with his move. This being the case, he may even show more ability than he did with the Cowboys now he feels at home... Scary thought that. For the rest of the comp that is.

Onya Smithy

Thank ranks up there with his
"Hand bags at 10 paces" - after "all in" between Knights and Eels
and
"A Draw is like watching your mother-in-law drive off a cliff in your new car....mixed emotions" - after Eels v Dogs 20 all drawn round 10 2001

He is a funny bastard when he wants to be

Man, for his comic skills & his improving performances coaching the team (I know, its early days) the club may want to upgrade his contract (if we win the GF in 05 or 06)

Coach Smith looked a relieved man. It's about time luck went his way & a GF win is recorded next to his name. He has been coaching for a long time & its about time he gets a premiership for at least his tenacity & sanity.

;-)
