He has a proven track record with juniors. This is the positive.

Given Canberras struggles to recruit, and the fact he is the least popular coach in the game with players, recruitment would still be limited to other clubs unwanted juniors. This is the negative.

However, on the whole, I'd prefer him to Elliott.

On what we saw from Elliot over his years he would be much better. Our juniors would get more of a run, we would actually play attacking footy. He would be a good coach for us.

As much as it pains me to say, Smith for all his faults prepares a better team than Elliott and likes to play an expansive game. It's what he does when the finals come around that concerns me but invariably, his teams more often than not make the semis and he has prepared some average teams and turned them into worldbeaters.

Can the same be said for Elliott?

I'd go with Smith too, while he still doesn't have a premiership his coaching record over an extremely long time is impressive. He rebuilt Parra from a rabble, while since the Mal era we're essentially still a rabble.

He would make a very good director of football operations or a simmilar role to that but I wouldnt want him as head coach.

Smith would be a valuable asset to the Raiders coaching staff. We need fresh, new ideas. Elliot is a great bloke, but something has to change.

Ask Schifcofske if Smitty's a good coach. Clinton rates him highly. I also would not be surprised if a Cayless & Hindmarsh followed Smith at contracts end such is his rapport with those guys. As for letting go quality players........ we aren't the Roosters or Broncos & certainly not the Bulldogs. Those players left for the money they deserved not opportunity. The is only so much under an Honest cap after all!

I hate that the Eels have made this decision. He is very good. I actually can't think of anyone I'd prefer at the helm of my team. I'm gutted.

I find that hard to believe considering the whole reason Shif left Parramatta was because Smith wasn't giving him a crack at first grade

What are you on. He was never not in 1st grade. Granted he was on the wing as much as he was fullback but that had less to do with others being better fullbacks & more to do with him being more versatile to cover wing than the other fullback options. He was a great Winger too & if he hadn't played there He'd never have had a shot at Origin. That's not an attack at him btw, he has deserved it for a long time.
