Brian Smiths Plan For The Future

Very interesting piece in todays newcastle Herald by Brian Smith. He says that he plans to get the Newcastle junior development back to the way it was in the early days. He says that under David Wait,Peter Sharpe, and Kieth Onslow Newcastle had the best junior development program out of any club in the NRL. He says he spent three solid months last year watching every Harold Mathews, SG Ball, Jersey Flegg, and premier League game, and studying the styles of all our juniors, he has done the same this year. He says he now has a very strong feel for the way forward for the club. He says it wont be a lot different from the methods used by Wait, Sharpe, and Onslow. Just a bit more intense and tightly planned because the competition is tougher now. He goes on to say that the club are putting structures into place, and pulling together Coaches, trainers, speed and strength specialists, and are looking for the very best of Newcastles qualified personel in developing talented youngsters. He also says if you know someone with the skills and would like the opportunity, then right now is a good time to contact him ASAP, because the bus is about to pull out for the building of the Knights future. A very interesting insight into the thinking of Smith. I think it's a very encouraging read.

nice, being in sydney now i don't really get to read any pro-knights media... it's nice to know that smith has come public with at least a portion of what he's doing.

I don't know if all have picked up on it, but several of our Flegg players this year were pulled out of the team for a couple of months and sent to the gym to bulk up.
As far as i can tell it was the guys with a realistic chance of playing PL next season, and the last game i saw these guys all looked fantastic.
Jenkinson, Richardson, Cooper, Jeans, Schillings - can't think who else - but these guys have all been given every chance to take their games to the next level.
During the time they were out we lost 8 out of 10 games and only won against the bottom two sides in the comp - but since they have returned we have won 3 from 4 - including the last 3 in a row with a win over second placed Parra.

That's exactly what I've been wanting to here. Moreso the incorporation of more 'extra' service staff, ones who will improve our players physically and help with the further modernisation of the club.

Brilliant stuff - exactly what we want to hear and we should see more of it.

Perhaps the club should start giving a snapshot of different sections of the club and the changes that are in place or in train.

Just a comment, does anyone actually believe that SC Hagan would have given any of this a passing thought!

I can see Hagan's strategy meeting now.

SC Hagan sits down at desk, gets pad and pencil, stares out the window, chews cuticles, picks up pencil and writes:

Strategic analysis for season 200X and action plan.
1. Hope Joey stays fit.
2. If Joey gets injured, hope he comes back quick.
3. If Joey is out for the season, pretend it doesn't matter.

There are many criticisms that can be levelled at smith but lack of attention to detail isn't one of them

Hagan does take an interest in the lower grades

during 2006 he was spotted at a few Eels SG Ball & Harold Mathews games.

but on Brian Smith one thing he is very good at is bringing a structure to a place that will develop successfull players.

People love to bash Brian for letting the likes of Willie Tonga, Andrew Ryan etc go but what they fail to mention is that the systems he had brought in were the reason these players were as good as they were when the came through the grades and eventually into the NRL and onto rep games.

Smith may not have the best record it retaining players but as far as developing players is concerned there are few better, even older players like Fuifui Moimoi, Matt Petersen etc became better players under Brian Smith.

I don't like concentrating on a few elite players in the juniors.
I actually think we would do far better if we cast the net a lot wider for a lot longer.

Hi Roopy ,

Not saying your being negative but the poor bloke has come out and tried to say something positive about local juniors as he has been bashed all week about importing all of these players.

Someone mentions after going through more players than any other club he picked a handful Fegg players to bulk them up and make them ready to player upper grades - and it still not enough!

Mate he could not take the whole team out.:D

I think we all need to take a pill.

Giving 19 year olds extra training is probably a fair thing because they are pretty much adults by that age anyway - but i've long believed that one Mathews team and one Ball team is not the way to find the best talent in a league nursery as large as Newcastle. Picking the top 20 15 year olds in Newcastle for Mathews is just silly. We should be giving the same level of training to the top 200 and maybe you could cut that down to the top 100 by age 17 and then cut it to 20 for Flegg - but our current system just doesn't recognise that kids who look fantastic at 14 and not progress at all, and other kids can be 6 stone wringing wet at 14 and end up looking like Chief by the time they are 20.

Mathews and Ball are a waste of time and money IMO and we should drop out of these comps next season in favour of setting up some real quality junior teams in Newcastle.

At the moment we take our best out of Newcastle comps to play in Sydney comps, which means we lower the standards for 100s of kids in local teams who might improve if they could measure themselves against the best.

Have you noticed noone in the media mentions the convenient oversight that Brian Smith operated under a salary cap at Parramatta, just like any other coach. Ryan and Tonga signed with canterbury off their own backs. I mean any coach who can make Jason Taylor look half decent as a halfback is a top coach in my book. Unfortunately as he found out in the 2001 Grand Final he signed a speedhump. BK and Simmo terrorised taylor.

Smith has always struck me as a coach who works his arse off during the week going through tapes, watching lower grades, etc, just one of those blokes who leaves no stone unturned

I'll post the full article because it's an interesting read into the future for the club.

Foundation Work: original blueprint vital guide in restoring castle to former glory

Brian Smith
17/08/07

Part of the plan for the Knights in season 2007 was to prepare for LAA (Life After Andrew).

We got there a whole heap earlier than anyone anticipated or wanted.
Adjusting the timing of that plan was necessary because there was no choice - it just had to be done.

The part that required immediate reaction has been met with some mixed results, but until a couple of weeks back our boys had battled pretty well to keep us in the hunt for a play-off spot.

Another part of the Knights plan was to assess the junior talent within the Hunter Region and look at ways to best maximise that base.

It is where we all hope the future Knights players are, and giving them a high-quality program to develop their talents will become near to the top of our priorities for next season and beyond.

The way most other NRL clubs trawl the pool of footy talent these days means that counting on your own kids for your club without building a great relationship with them from a young age leaves them wide open to being hooked out of their home club.

The Knights, in the early phase of their proud 20-year history, had a remarkable production rate.

So many young talents of the highest order made their way all the way to the top at the Knights and eventually to a couple of premiership victories.

Today there are quite a few of those who have slipped through the net and are now using those talents at other NRL clubs - too many to mention here.

That's not a knock on anyone - it just shows how times have changed and how we must take account of those fierce opponents we have in the recruitment stakes.

Getting better at identifying talent and showing our own kids that we are the best way for them to make it to the top is a big part of what we must do.

Looking back can sometimes` provide answers for the best way to a prosperous future, and in this case I have the benefit of some inside knowledge.

That era where so many high-quality players were identified, produced and retained had a systemised approach.

The Head coach was at the helm of not only the big boys' program at NRL level, but also he ensured that all players and coaches down to Harold Matthews Cup(under 16's) were on the same page, learning how to prepare and play Knights style.

When you look back on the names of the coaches and other associated staff driving that program to huge successes, it makes for impressive reading.

Daivid Waite, Peter Sharp and Keith Onslow, for starters, have gone on to make big names for themselves in coaching ,administration and talent identification and development in footy at the Knights and beyond. That's where we are headed in 2008.

I spent every day of July, August and September of 2006 in my home office watching every Premier League ,Jersey Flegg, SG Ball and Harold Matthews Cup game that the Knights played last season to familiarise myself with the players and the styles each team were playing.

I have spent plenty of time doing likewise this season from an insider's perspective and have a strong feel now on the way forward.

It won't be too different to what worked back in the Knights early days , although it will need to be a bit more intense and tightly planned because the competition is tougher.

We are starting to put staff and structures into place that will pull us together from top to bottom in all aspects of preparation - coaches, trainers, strength and speed specialists, etc.

And we are looking for the very best of Newcastle's qualified personnel in developing talented youngsters.

If you know of someone who has the necessary skills and is looking for the opportunity, right now would be a good time for you to tell them to contact me at the Knights ASAP.

The bus is about to pull out for the building of the knights future.

I suppose he had nothing better to do while waiting to take over the coaching duties.

thats cause the unnamed players are rebecca wilson good player lol.
that paper loves the unnamed players because these players say what the telegraph want them to say because they dont exist. it helps to write the story if you just make it up .
most people with any sense can see what smith is doing should of been done long ago and that the telegraph just have a problem with smith . most players he has cut are sh*t and arent first grade standard.

During the super league war my father decided that he would not buy News Limited Papers and did not do so for near six years. At the time I was not living in Newcastle but he told me that the paper was biased and he did not believe he should spend his hard earned on the publication.

After the last little while, I know exactly why he did what he did.
