Player dumped after rape charge

June 3, 2005

A MEMBER of the Brisbane Broncos development squad has been stood down by the National Rugby League club after police charged him with rape.

The charge follows an investigation by police after a 32-year-old woman alleged she was raped in the aftermath of last month's State of Origin match in Brisbane.

The player, who plays for the Broncos' feeder club Toowoomba in the Queensland Cup, appeared before Brisbane Magistrates' Court today after a warrant was issued yesterday.

He was granted bail and will re-appear at a later date. He plans to defend the charge.

Broncos managing director Bruno Cullen distanced the club from the allegations.

I see that but it doesn't mention any names?

Broncos managing director Bruno Cullen distanced the club from the allegations.

"I want to stress that, as far as I am aware, there are no allegations or complaints of any misconduct against any of the 30 players in the Broncos NRL Squad," Mr Cullen said in a statement.

"We have co-operated fully with the police on this matter. To this end, it would not be prudent for me or anyone else on behalf of this club to make any further comment until all inquiries are finalised by the police.

"Like everyone else, we want to see the matter investigated fully and properly.

"In the best interests of all concerned the player has been stood down until the finalisation of the matter.

"The player has advised us that he will strongly defend the charge.
"I can assure everyone that on numerous occasions the club has ensured that Broncos players are reminded of the importance of proper social behaviour.

"This club has a positive reputation in the community and we work extremely hard to maintain that reputation."

It does in the posted Courier Mail link?

It mentions a player in that link but it doesn't mention anywhere that he is the same person that has been charged.

The Bronco *not* involved has already been named in The Courier-Mail. The Toowoomba player in trouble though was formerly with the Cowboys/Young Guns.

Why can't you say names exactly? Is the bloke under 18 or something?

no idea of his age but news sources aren't saying his name and they had his face pixelated on the 5 o'clock Ten News from Queensland.

Under the law (In QLD anyway not sure about other states) a person can be named before they are charged and after they've been aquited or convicted, but after they've been charged before the result is known they can't be publicly identified.

That's why it's always funny, when someones name and face is splashed all over the place when it says they've been arrested, but then the next night when it's reported he's been charged, they don't name names and pixilate his/her face.

That's stupid.

In response to your original question, bluesbreaker, we ourselves cannot name names on this website because it could be closed down and the owners sued to defamation.

A rival forum was closed down for weeks after one club took this very course of action, ironically giving the breath of life to this forum :)

I just hope that this incident is reported fairly in the media for what it is - and turkeys like R.Wilson don't jump on their moral highhorse and swear never to attend a Broncos game, or pronounce rugby league as a 'disgusting culture' as one AFL journalist took it upon himself to do.

Yes, it is a disgraceful incident - if true - and justice deserves to be done. But it is not an open invitation for vultures to pounce on rugby league, where 99.9% of all involved try to do the right thing.
