Broncos have unfair advantage

If the network gets decent tv figures because of the broncos on a Friday night it can't be a bad thing for the game.

Plus the broncos will be smashed out of routine when they play on different nights.

The whole concept that the television networks control the scheduling of matches is ridiculous if you ask me.

The AFL don't let it happen, they schedule all their matches at the very start of the season and it hasnt affected their TV ratings one bit.

They're not reliant on a tv deal for the majority of their income. AFL games in Melbourne average close to 30k every week which is double what Sydney NRL clubs get. If you want the NRL to make money then the TV deal is essential, and broadcasters are only going to pay big cash if the deal favours them.

The money from ticket sales is peanuts compared to the tv/media contracts.

I don't know if you could call it chicken feed in comparison. Considering they (AFL) get about 6.5 million a year through the gates, I reckon it'd be fair to say they make hundreds of millions in gate takings over the life of a tv rights deal. Add the gate reciepts up and compare what they get for tv contracts and Id say it'd be much closer than what you think.

IMO all clubs should get 8 friday night, 8 sat night, and 8 sunday arvo games with one additional eg. fri night. that way everyone gets the same amount of games at any given timeslot.

The point is that in the AFL they make a stackload of cash from gate receipts and memberships which is a nice little complement to what they recieve for a tv contract. As Evenflow said that can add up to a nice total very quickly. The NRL are not in such a prime position. The game RELIES on the tv contract and when it comes to negotiations broadcasting times and such are going to be high on the agenda for any network interested in aquiring the rights.

Certain clubs have unique circumstances though. The Cowboys prefer saturday home games as many of their supporters travel a long way to see them play, and friday doesn't work well for the Warriors as a 7:30 kick-off in Auckland translates to 5:30 in Sydney/Brisbane, which does however fit Saturday scheduling pretty well.

I'm sure the reason they do it is to offset the 40 point flogging they are going to receive at the hands of the mighty Red V in Round 4.

dreaming again! just like the ten sicks reunion. Broncos by 60. youll be crying in ur beer scotty!

as for this thread, LOL @ it. Broncos rate well, their crowds are easily the best, everyone should bow down to the broncos because they are saving rugby league. well start bowing.

i love the friday games, i work in brisbane so its good to just go from work to the game, rather than having to go up to brisbane on a sunday as well as mon, tue, wed, thu, fri

Yeah that makes sense. Because everyone wants to watch the wooden spooners running around on FNF every third week.

The Broncos get the best TV slots because they draw the biggest TV audiences. The NRL and 9 want to maximise revenue so naturally the most popular team is used to draw in TV ratings. Its the natural result of Brisbane being under represented relative to other areas in the NRL.

I agree that the qld live game should be spread throughout the qld sides for home games but theres a good reason for the cowboys not getting friday night home games. Due to our team being a massive region and not a single town/city/suburb some supporters travel up to 8 hours to get to games from places inland, down the coast or up the penisula so sat night games are ideal to suit these fans that may work a mon-fri week and have enough time to travel.

But also i'll be pretty sick of watching the broncos get gifted match winning tries by the refs for another 5 weeks
