Broncos in QLD cup 2014

Random discussion about QLD cup with Broncos related matters...

Some interesting points for this weekend:

- Looks like Marmin Barba is struggling to even make the Ipswich team, being named at #17
- Stewart Mills playing fullback for Redcliffe

Not Broncos related but interesting to see Mitchell Frei lined up at lock for Wynnum. I guess his stint at Newcastle(?) didn't work out?

Another interesting one is Baptiste at reserve hooker for Souths Logan. Must admit I anticipated big things for Baptiste, but it's looking more likely that the Broncos might have made the right call... Maybe he is still recovering from his shoulder injuries.

Baptiste is on the books of Canberra this year.

Yeah mate I know. Just surprised he is nowhere near the first grade team. Over the last few years many Broncos fans (including myself) were calling for him to get a shot off the bench with the Broncos but he only got a couple of games. The fact that he isn't close to making the Raiders team either suggests the Broncs made the right call letting him go...

Some quite interesting developments here:

http://www.broncos.com.au/news/2014/04/01/nikorima_brothers_halve_it_up.html

".... regular five-eighth Duncan Paia’aua to the Queensland Cup with the Central Capras."

"Francis Molo also goes to the Queensland Cup, to continue his front row apprenticeship with the Norths Devils."

Looks like Broncos are promoting some of their 20s to QLD cup.

Interesting that Duncan Paia’aua would play QLD cup before Kodi.

Yeah he is coming back from injury, watched a game the other week and Souths looked better when he came on, I just don't think they'll risk him starting just yet but I would say it'll happen sooner rather than later.

Mills and Strasser were horrible for Redcliffe today. Actually the other half for the dolphins was way more dominant, Davis or someone. Pretty poor display from someone who is on the fringe of first grade. Especially when we are looking desperately for a 5/8, it is quite disappointing.

I thought Hala was good without being outstanding. I kind of want to see him completely dominate at that level, a bit like Taumalolo last year.

Byrnes is quick but lacks the strength to play first grade yet, reminds me of Berryman.

Barba was the pick of the Broncos feeder players today.

Molo wasn't on the field for long, maybe under instructions from Broncos? Who knows. But yeh he was ineffective.

Nicholls was very good, seems a decent signing, he's much better than Strasser. Would love to see him get a go this year.

Agreed. A much better depth option that Strasser!

From Dazzat in a different thread:

Kahu may still be struggling with injury - both physically and between the ears - having gone through so much.

It's a chicken and egg scenario for me. Don't you think it strange that virtually NO PLAYER on the Broncos books playing in the ISC ever seems to shine (with the exception of Ben Hannant).

One wonders what sort of pathway there is between ISC and first grade.

It seems more often than not, that once a player goes back to ISC, that is where they stay.

I think this is a really worthy discussion point...

The other problem for mine is that Kahu has predominantly been playing Wing so that the Wynnum is largely undisturbed.

To me this really highlights why the Broncos need their own dedicated QLD cup team. Broncos need Kahu playing 5/8 week in and week out.

If you are not a fan of the Kahu argument then there are other Broncos affiliated players who when go back to ISC have to play out of position or not get the minutes that they should be getting. Just so the relevant ISC team doesn't get their nose out of joint...

If the Broncos affiliated ISC teams aren't willing to put the Broncos affiliated players first (which I'm not necessarily suggesting they should), then the Broncos need to tell them to bugger off.

If we go back to the Clydesdales - the last time that Brisbane had a dedicated Queensland Cup side - not only was the side successful itself, but so many players out of that era went on to bigger and better things. The coach back then was John Dixon from memory.

There is a reason why Toowoomba and Aspley folded.

The pros don't outweigh the cons.

The current system isn't ideal but the Broncos have the advantage of picking the premier talent from the Capras, Jets, Seagulls, Dolphins & Devils.

Course they don't get all of them and there were a few players (Burchell, Bambling) in the Queensland 18s that we missed out on but we're also getting some great talent too and with strides being made in Souths Logan, the Broncos will have a stronger grasp of Queensland (which they should).

It really doesn't say much about our junior development, does it. Granted, there are a fair few Broncos in the first grade team who are our own juniors, but many that have attempted to break into first grade (Norman being an example) have been exceptionally mundane.

When was the last time the Broncos developed a player like Barba, Milford or Cherry Evans?

No it doesn't and there's been some lean years but the club has made some good strides in recent times and it was always going to take sometime to adjust.

To me I don't understand why this should be an advantage.

Broncos recruits should be looking across the entire QLD cup regardless of what teams are affiliated with the Broncos. Should be looking at the NSW Cup, English comp, Fiji, NZ, PNG, i.e. everywhere!
