There is a reason why Toowoomba and Aspley folded.

The pros don't outweigh the cons.

The current system isn't ideal but the Broncos have the advantage of picking the premier talent from the Capras, Jets, Seagulls, Dolphins & Devils.

Course they don't get all of them and there were a few players (Burchell, Bambling) in the Queensland 18s that we missed out on but we're also getting some great talent too and with strides being made in Souths Logan, the Broncos will have a stronger grasp of Queensland (which they should).

Pete ... you must be seeing advantages I don't. Sorry, but I just don't see the club "picking the premier talent" anywhere. Taking the last five to six years in total, it's clear the model isn't working at all.

I'm sure there were reasons why Aspley and Toowoomba folded ... probably very good reasons, but its clear that there is a massive disconnect between our second string teams and the firsts.

As opposed to Sydney teams which have dedicated second division teams, and it is quite clear that their players are able to transition between the divisions much easier than Brisbane players.

As I said earlier, it is quite apparent that going back to the ISC is more often than not, a one-way journey. Few, if any, make it back into the first grade team.

By establishing these affiliations it gives us first dibs on all those different junior nurseries and establishes a clear pathway through the grades.

The Broncos already recruit from a lot of those different regions and while it would be nice to see them set up a junior academy in Auckland, the logistics of that would be unrealistic. The Broncos would send themselves broke moving these kids and their families to Brisbane to see whether or not they'll play first grade (most wouldn't).

Manly's experiment with using the Sunshine Coast as a feeder club obviously didn't work from the financial point of view (but of course was very successful from a competitive point of view, but that's now why the partnership was formed).

I imagine it became very costly, so I think keeping things close geographically is important.

I think Brisbane and the ISC competition would best be served if the number of feeder clubs were reduced because there is just too much dilution. As IBM mentioned with the example of Kahu ... how will Brisbane ever know how he is going in regard to possibly playing 5/8 if they never get to see him in that role?

If Brisbane had two teams instead of 4 or 5, perhaps an arrangement could be struck where the Broncos become more partners rather than the loose arrangements in place at the moment.

The other problem for mine is that Kahu has predominantly been playing Wing so that the Wynnum is largely undisturbed.

That would not be correct. I can only assume that is where the Broncos have requested he play. Any Wynnum supporter and presumably the coach would much prefer to see Kahu in the centres and Mitchell Buckett on the wing so Buckett's defensive shortcomings are less of a problem.

Tonight Wynnum had David Stagg coming off the bench. Surely not their choice. The word was he was to be limited to 40 minutes playing time tonight, presumably because he is still 18th/19th man against Canberra but they felt he needed a run this week just in case (two bob each way).

Queensland Cup teams always have to disrupt their teams if required to fit in NRL players needing a run.

There are plenty of good NRL contracted players playing in the q cup, just seems they are all contracted to Cowboys, Storm and Titans. Says a lot about our recruitment quality really, Strasser, Whitchurch, (not sure if still signed) Stagg, Barba etc are average.

I think we need to go to one feeder team too. There are some clubs that need an NRL feeder but Redcliffe Wynnum and Ipswich are fine by themselves.

Would love the Broncos to resurrect Wests Panthers and play them as a reserve grade Broncos side. It's local to Red Hill, and Wests seniors don't even exist anymore so not like Broncos can "kill" them off.

From what I have heard the 20s will be scrapped in the next few years so this could be on the cards

Would love my childhood team of choice the Panthers to be resurrected. Totally true Hellteam. Over the past two/three years, I can't think of too many players (if any) who have "knocked on the door of first grade" from the ISC. If they did know, no one answered.

The bottom line is that the Broncos do not want to pay for the cost of a second level team. In the past, they have used the "shells" of dying clubs/teams like Brothers and Toowoomba, then walked away when it all got too hard.

The current arrangement is simple and cheap for them.

Most Sydney-based teams run two/three teams, even more. In the end, the Broncos being a publicly-listed company is probably not interested in managing another few levels of teams - to their detriment.

What we are seeing now, is that Sydney teams are now producing young players like shelling peas, but Brisbane - the once great developer of young players - is now easily the worst at bringing on new players.

Having the current arrangement is probably "simple and cheap", but its going to cost more in the long run IMO.
