The refs saw their role as facilitiating that play, rather than ensuring the game is played by the rules by actually watching what is happening.

It is a shame that the refs are the biggest play makers on the field as they are now (penalty count 4 times line breaks, way more opportunity in opposition half through penalties than players making plays) but the real fault in that regard lies with the coaches and their insistence on totally conservative play. Complete sets, get to kick, bomb, pressure, force errors, wait for penalties - hope they see it our way. The key play maker with whistle in hand gets a decision wrong. Lets blame him for all our problems.
Sorry coach Madge, your conservative play left it in the hands of the ref to make the plays. Here is an idea, coach your players to make plays.
