Bruce Stadium bound, advice requested

Hello All

Having recently moved to the nation's capital, I have been looking forward to seeing the NRL's most beloved club go through its paces at Bruce Stadium. That scenario will be realised (for 2003) this weekend when St George-Illawarra rolls into town with its collective minds focused on extending its recent domination of the Can'tberra Faders.

As I fully intend to take a swing-out to Bruce to partake in the red & white hued festivities, I was wondering if any seasoned visitors to the venue have any advice to offer for a wide-eyed debutante?

Where should I sit? What should I avoid? What is parking like at the ground? Will I need to take out a mortgage in order to buy snacks and beverages? Will I be strip-searched at the gate? How much does it cost to get in?

Any advice would be gratefully received.

The most important thing to avoid when attending Canberra matches in the capitol is the appearence of being too well prepared and organised.

I have only been to one match, but I observed this phenomenon, which I haven't seen anywhere else.

One guy in particular sticks in my mind. He was a portly, bespectacledman in early middle age who had binoculars, a thermos of coffee, cut sandwiches, a rug to put over his knees andall appropriate flags and banners etc. He was sitting by himself and loudly yelling well thought out encouragements to the team. Large sections of the crowd eventually tired of this behaviour (harmless as it seemed to me), and started pelting him with empty plastic beer cups and shouting 'bloody public servants.' Obviously this is a hated breed in Canberra, and it would be best if you avoided looking like one.

You will be enjoying a great game of league from
one of the premier grounds in the competition.
Parking is cheap, well it was last year only $4
If you like a beer you are not force fed tooheys
they sell fine CUB products
Unfortunately, i dont know any venue that doesnt cost
the earth when it comes to food and drinks.
I read somewhere they havent put there admission prices
up this year so if you get general it should be $12-$14
Although i cannot guarantee you will walk away satisfied
cos the raiders are a diff team this year and i dont think
they will give saints much to work with but lets just wait
and see what happens shall we

The last (only) time I went to Bruce Stadium, Gary Belcher was the Raiders fullback and Terry Lamb captained Canterbury

Warm clothing is throughly recommened at all times in Canberra, particularly if you are just visiting for the week from the tropics. The last time I was there, the car park was dusty, so it is always a possibiltiy Mrs CyberKev will have to do some extended work in the laundry.

And, as at all grounds, avoid the catering unless you are subscribed to the ambulance.

Bugger it! I'll never be able to shake the obsequious, middle-class bureaucrat demeanour in time to rejoice in the warm embrace of Bruce's incumbent toothless brigade! Years of carefully measured evolution have made me what I am today and this cannot be overturned in the space of four days (not without the thousands of big ones charged by a quality Spin doctor, at any rate). My partner has requested to accompany me on this pilgrimage (buggered if I know why, maybe she thinks that this is just an elaborate scheme I've devised to pick-up a fresh piece on the side... Not overly attuned to the vagaries of spectator sport, my missus); so perhaps I could use this to my advantage by dressing her up in full Muslim regalia and sitting her at a safe distance to my right (so as to divert attention from my own debilitating public disservice visage).

I'm fully expecting that the team will put me on a natural ecstacy high and that the need for performance enhancing substances will thus be rendered redundant. Mind you, a hit of prozac may be on the shopping list if things starting going awry for the lads on the field.

Thanks for the heads-up... Looks as if I may be able to get out of this for $30 (or therabouts), which is perfectly reasonable for an afternoon's entertainment. I'll take your word about Bruce's premier stadium status, but I'm looking forward to giving the joint the once over. Canberra indeed appears to have improved a tad over the summer, but this will be their first genuine test of the new season.

I've actually found Canberra to be warmer than Ballarat, although this will most certainly change come the winter. In fact, I've found it so hospitable weather wise that I might crack out the singlet and thongs for the day. Even if it does get the goose pimples multiplying, it will at least help to throw the natives off my public disservice scent...

Its a great ground, although when i went last it was being reconstructed. Hopefully a good crowd will be in attendance, no reason why there shouldn't be with the Brumbies over in Auckland this weekend

It's a top ground to watch footy in.

I was planning to go but i doubt i can get from Sydney to Canberra in an hour.

Kev, my only advice would be to see if you can find an old Raiders jersey and blend in with the locals. I have a few spare if you are interested and believe me, as soon as you put it on it will change your life forever.

If it makes it any easier, you can wear my jersey signed by Laurie Daley just for that small Dragons touch.
