Bryce Gibbs - Good Start

There are a number of Tigers players worth mentioning for their round 1 performance. One in particular, in my opinion, is Bryce Gibbs.

He has often been criticised for his performances in his time with the tigers, and i have been one of the first to say "He has to go" but the prop that I saw on Monday night was a different one to the prop i have seen play before.

He showed committment in tackles, and his first up contact was always tough, and he really put his head down when running the ball, helping us get metres when we needed them out of our own end..

From all reports he was the standout prop in the trial against the cowboys too. If players like Gibbs, and Heighington, and even Fulton to some degree, can manage to play consistently and hard each week, like what we have seen so far, then we can compete with the best of teams and push for a top 4 finish.

I know we are only one round in, but i am confident, given what I saw on Monday, that a few of our 'under-performers' can take the game to the opposition this year.

Thoughts?

Lets see how the 2005 Tigers compare to the 2010 Tigers, when at full strength:

1. Brett Hodgson - Lote Tuqiri
2. Daniel Fitzhenry - Beau Ryan
3. Shane Elford - Blake Ayshford
4. Paul Whatuira - Chris Lawrence
5. Pat Richards - Taniela Tuiaki
6. Benji Marshall - Benji Marshall
7. Scott Prince - Tim Moltzen/Robert Lui
8. Bryce Gibbs - Bryce Gibbs
9. Robbie Farah - Robbie Farah
10. John Skandalis - Keith Galloway
11. Ben Galea - Junior Moors
12. Chris Heighington - Chris Heighington
13. Mark O'Neill - Gareth Ellis

14. Dene Halatau - Daniel Fitzhenry
15. Liam Fulton - Liam Fulton
16. Anthony Laffranchi - Jason Cayless
17. Todd Payten - Todd Payten

Gibbs has been getting better every year. His best years will be from now on and into the next five (which is typical for a prop of his age). I rate him more valueable to Wests than Galloway because although Keith has more impact in hitting the ball up, Gibbs' defense and endurance is better than Galloway's.

Gibbs' improvement has been, & will continue to be the quality of his hit-ups, and the development of an off-load. Creating second phase play with Benji, Farah, Moltzen, Lawrence, & Tuqiri lurking around would be lethal.

Im really happy Galloway extended his contract this week, and I hope Gibbs sticks with this side for the next 3-5 years. He is going to be/already is an excellent front rower.

Gibbs probably has more minutes in his petrol tank than any other NRL frontrower and now he is getting a little older and wiser he is a better footballer for it. Although still got the brain explosion in him and will probably top the penalty count again this year.

I honestly think he gets a bad rap on the "stupid penalty" issue. I noted on several occasions last year he gave away blatent penalties, but they were actually very good ones to give away. A fair few of these were at a time when the team was back pedalling in defence and looking likely to concede a try.

I'd love to see a stat not only of how many penalties actually Gibbs conceded last year, but also what the tackle count was at the time and where abouts on the field the play was at when the offense occurred.

This is a good point, a REALLY good point.

When first watching these games, live, or on fox live, i would grit my teeth and roll my eyes thinking "another gibbs penalty?".

But when looking back on a lot of them, most of his penalties are given away when the team is struggling to make it back in to the line in time for the next play from the opposition.

I wonder wether this is how Gibbs is told to play from the coach, and if this is the case, then it is a master stroke.

If it is not the case, then it is intelligent rugby league from our front rower.

Was great last night. A true asset to the team. Let's hope he keeps it up.

I've bagged him and Ryan on the off season. Last night they shut me up.
