The Bulldogs have denied a rumour that captain Andrew Ryan is seeking release a from the club to join Parramatta.
Bulldogs chief executive officer Malcolm Noad said Ryan hadn't approached him and he wasn't expecting him to.
The rumour says NSW State-of-Origin and Test forward Ryan wants to return to his former club, the Eels following the internal Bulldogs turmoil accompanying the Willie Mason saga.
Meanwhile, Parramatta coach Michael Hagan was expected to push for stronger penalties for grapple tackles at the annual coaches meeting yesterday.
He was to be supported by Brisbane Broncos coach Wayne Bennett, who rarely attends the meetings, but was making an exception this year.

Well done Johnny Mac, we already knew that.
Now what happens after his contract expires, now that's another matter. Maybe the dogs extend his contract, maybe they don't...

BULLDOGS captain Andrew Ryan has gone some way towards alleviating the concerns of supporters by pledging his allegiance to the club and revealing his preference is to remain at Belmore after next season.

Ryan, speaking for the first time since the Willie Mason saga surfaced more than two weeks ago, told The Australian yesterday he was in no rush to decide his future.

However, he denied he would seek a release to play elsewhere and made it clear he would exhaust all avenues with the Dogs before exploring his options for 2009.

"My first preference would be to stay at the Dogs," Ryan said. "Hopefully we can sort something out. If we can come up with something and both parties are happy, I would be happy to sign straight away.

"But I'm not going to jump straight in.

"It's a pretty important contract for me. Hopefully it's not my last, but it could be."

As for speculation he wanted out of his contract following the club's decision to release Mason, Ryan said: "That's definitely not happening. I'm at the Bulldogs. I'm seeing out my contract. There's no way I am going to seek a release."

Ryan also distanced himself from speculation he was being courted by former club Parramatta. "That's the first I have heard of that," he said.

He was among a group of players who appeared before the board last week seeking explanations over several issues, including the decision to release Mason. The players also wanted to know the machinations of the move to the Olympic Park precinct, which the Bulldogs are scheduled to undertake in January.

Coach Steve Folkes' position is under scrutiny and the club is likely to wait until early in the season to decide whether to extend his deal past 2008.

Several players are also off contract, including former Test centre Willie Tonga and fullback Luke Patten, who said yesterday he would prefer to stay at the Bulldogs. The flipside of that is the Bulldogs have money to enter the player market, with officials flagging plans to pursue Melbourne star Israel Folau.

"I guess there's a few unknowns beyond next year," Ryan said. "There's a few blokes off contract. At the moment, after the holidays and everything that's happened, we're just going to take it slow with the Dogs."

As for what awaits next season, Ryan admitted it shaped as a significant challenge for the club and his captaincy.

The Dogs have lost forward leaders Mark O'Meley and Mason, as well as halfback Brent Sherwin, and have had an off-season shrouded in controversy. Mason's axing, and his subsequent criticism of Folkes, was the most conspicuous incident.

"Folkesy is our coach for 2008 and we're looking forward to having a great season under hm," Ryan said.

"It's going to be a challenge. A couple of guys who left, O'Meley and Mason, were part of our leadership group.

"We have a lot of new guys in the squad. We have a lot of young players. It's pretty exciting actually. We're going to have to rip in every week."
