Bulldogs fined over Coffs conduct
By staff writers
May 18, 2004

BULLDOGS officials have fined a group of players up to 25 per cent of their salaries for issues relating to their conduct during a training camp in Coffs Harbour in February.

The club's chief executive officer, Malcolm Noad, confirmed today the penalties were all part of an effort to prove that the National Rugby League club is serious about discipline and a change in its culture.

"The fines are up to the maximum allowable under a player's contract, and while the players have apologised to the board for their conduct, the board and I considered that it was necessary to send a clear message to the community, as well as the players, that inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated," Mr Noad said in a statement.

"I want to emphasise that these fines have nothing to do with the police investigation that has recently been concluded."

Mr Noad revealed that the players fined had asked their boss to apologise on their behalf to Bulldogs sponsors, their supporters and the rugby league community for their conduct.

Mr Noad also revealed that the players fined had been put on notice regarding their behaviour.

"How they conduct themselves, as representatives of this club and as sporting role models, is under scrutiny like never before," he said.

"They have a responsibility to the club, sponsors and the community as well as their fans to act appropriately at all times."

The Bulldogs board will donate half the fines to an unspecified charity and the other half will be spent on player education programs.

"I would particularly like to thank our loyal sponsors and supporters who have supported us during these last few months," Mr Noad said.

25% is a hell of a lot for players that did nothing wrong. ;-)

They breached the club code of conduct, and have been punished accordingly.

Some people wont quit unless they see a hanging

I like how the players want to apologise but the players will not reveal themselves to apologise or own up to what they are apologising for.

They were fined for breaching the code of conduct. You can hardly call that doing nothing wrong, particularly in light of what it's led to.

Bringing women back to the teams hotel is a breach of the code of conduct.

Of course it's not in the same ballpark as assaulting police officers.

Why, so you can point fingers and call them rapists when their was insufficent evidence to do so!

I agree. The players should apologise themselves rather than asking their boss to do it on their behalf. Its pretty weak of them!!!!

No. Firstly Noad has said it wasn't anything to do with the police investigation. I am happy to take his word on that.

I just find it ridiculous to say the players apologise for their actions but not saying what their actions were. If was the urination incident or whatever then the player involved should have the guts to come out as an individual and apologise. Or the apology from the players should have been left out. Otherwise Noad could have made the anouncement over the fines and left out the apology from the players.

The judge made no mention of assaulting police when handing down a nothing penalty to walker. Maybe the roosters have the police in their pockets as well

I think it is too difficult now to name any players. If anyone comes out publicly and apologises then they will be "marked" forever when they may have never done anything illegal.

If as ngap says that the club left out the apology then everyone would be asking "Where is the apology?"

These are some of heaviest fines ever given out in Australian sport. While it was not for doing anything illegal, they obviously did wrong by breaching the code of conduct. Punishment this harsh will surely stop anyone from doing it again, and after all isn't that really what we want?

Interesting signature dice. Are you really that obsessed with The Bulldogs that you ensure you have something about them in every post you make?

I would have thought that people would use their signatures to support their teams rather than bring down others.

Also, are saying that whenever I go to the football that I am looking for a fight?

Cammo,

It is a bit of comical relief at the expense of some comical bulldogs supporters. If you are not one of those trouble-makers then just ignore it.

Ha ha ha

He was found guilty and got a 12 month suspended sentence. What do mean no mention of it.

There is a walker thread here, talk about him there. This thread is about the Bulldogs fine. I will delete all further posts if they aren't in the right thread.

They should of been named. Not good enough IMO.

I'd hate to of been one of the players not fined and nobody knows about it.

I really don't see what naming the players acheives. If they do name the players then what? I think everyone will then consider them guilty when they may not be and that is unfair.

Still, naming the players does not really help repair the game. It just opens more doors for the media and everyone else to keep talking about it. I would rather forget it and hope nothing like this ever happens again.

At least these fines will pretty much ensure it won't happen at The Bulldogs ever again.
