Bulldogs fined over Coffs conduct

May 18, 2004
BULLDOGS officials have fined a group of players up to 25 per cent of their salaries for issues relating to their conduct during a training camp in Coffs Harbour in February.
The club's chief executive officer, Malcolm Noad, confirmed today the penalties were all part of an effort to prove that the National Rugby League club is serious about discipline and a change in its culture.
"The fines are up to the maximum allowable under a player's contract, and while the players have apologised to the board for their conduct, the board and I considered that it was necessary to send a clear message to the community, as well as the players, that inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated," Mr Noad said in a statement.
"I want to emphasise that these fines have nothing to do with the police investigation that has recently been concluded."
Mr Noad revealed that the players fined had asked their boss to apologise on their behalf to Bulldogs sponsors, their supporters and the rugby league community for their conduct.
Mr Noad also revealed that the players fined had been put on notice regarding their behaviour.
"How they conduct themselves, as representatives of this club and as sporting role models, is under scrutiny like never before," he said.
"They have a responsibility to the club, sponsors and the community as well as their fans to act appropriately at all times."
The Bulldogs board will donate half the fines to an unspecified charity and the other half will be spent on player education programs.
"I would particularly like to thank our loyal sponsors and supporters who have supported us during these last few months," Mr Noad said.
