Bulldogs pick strong side

11 January 2005

The Canterbury Bulldogs have included 10 members of their grand final-winning team in a 19-man squad for the Carnegie World Club Challenge against Leeds Rhinos at Elland Road next month.

The Bulldogs are without four internationals through injury - Mark O'Meley, Willie Mason, Matt Utai and Andrew Ryan - but their squad for the match on February 4 contains four players involved in the recent Gillette Tri Nations Series.

Kangaroo centre Willie Tonga is joined by Kiwi internationals Sonny Bill Williams, Roy Asotasi and Jamal Lolesi.

Nineteen-year-old Williams missed New Zealand's final match against Great Britain with a shoulder injury but is expected to line up for the Australian champions.

Another familiar name is that of second row Tony Grimaldi, who was captain of Gateshead Thunder in their one-off season in Super League in 1999 and went on to play two seasons with Hull before returning to Canterbury, and record-breaking goal-kicking winger Hazem El Masri.

"Obviously we're missing some of our established representative players due to injury. But that gives a few of the younger players an opportunity, and I'm looking forward to finding out what they can do at this level," said Bulldogs coach Steve Folkes.

Leeds, appearing in their first World Club Challenge, will be without Great Britain hooker Matt Diskin who is recovering from a knee re-construction. But they are expected to give a debut to new signing Gareth Ellis.

Canterbury squad: Braith Anasta, Chris Armit, Roy Asotasi, Trent Cutler, Adam Brideson, Ben Czislowski, Hazem El Masri, Tony Grimaldi, Corey Hughes, Jamaal Lolesi, Reni Maitua, Nate Myles, Brett Oliver, Luke Patten, Adam Perry, Cameron Phelps, Trevor Thurling, Willie Tonga, Sonny Bill Williams.

Don't be too sure, I'd like to see the Rhino's squad, it's a stronger side than I thought Folkes would send.

I really think they will get a shock - but it would be good to see the trophy back in Australia after Penrith's efforts last year

Rooster Cogburn.,
If they win it will be a different trophy to the one they tried to get in Coffs Harbour.

Always a moron.

It's a different trophey to what we lifted in October.

Where is the one that the Roosters lifted?  \\:D/ \\:D/

The fact that Ben Czislowski is in the squad says it's weak.

Willie Tonga was a nobody at Parra

Becoming a Bulldog does wonders for a players self estemm, and motivation. Im guessing that he is a far better player now than when you last saw him

Doesn't look that strong to me. No Sherwin either. They'll get rolled by Leeds.

Off season surgery as far as I know, the reason a lot of Doggies are not turning up......well that and the fact the Doggies never like sending a full strength team to anything but an NRL game.

the game is a waste of time

A waste of time for whom exactly?

Not for two teams that will be striving to claim the title of best club team in the world, nor for the 30 000 fans who will be at Elland Road.

How could you be so cynical?
