LUKE BURT racked up 24 points from two tries and eight goals yesterday, but perhaps his biggest play didn't result in any points. It stopped Newcastle from scoring a few, though, at a time when the game was still within reach for them and lifted Parramatta.
Knights halfback Jarrod Mullen's 46th-minute bomb was coming down with try potential written all over it until Eels winger Burt rose as high as he is ever likely to and plucked the ball out of the air. He knew he was in for a heavy landing, but these are the risks you take. Parramatta led 20-8 at the time. Ten minutes later, winger Eric Grothe extended that lead with a try and it was game over.
Eels centre Krisnan Inu said Burt's defusal boosted the team at the right time.
''It was a big play,'' he said. ''He pulled something out of his bag of tricks and for him to catch the ball and hang on to it when he hit the ground gave us all a lift. At that time, everyone was looking for a bit of a spark to start us up again.''
Eels coach Daniel Anderson added: ''Luke had a great game today and I think that's a measure of his confidence. We had a lot of very high performers today - Krisnan was one and 'Burty' was another.''
Burt already holds the record for most points in a game for the Eels, having twice scored 28. He actually touched down three times yesterday, but on the first occasion the try was disallowed by video referee Tim Mander for a push on a Newcastle player.
''I didn't think I'd pushed him that hard,'' Burt said. ''But it was, apparently, hard enough.''
