he did as much as (probably more than) anyone could ask of a winger who's side of the field was ignored by the opposition

Burt rarely got the ball because no one gave it to him. When it did come his way, or he ran out of dummy half with it, he made a lot of metres.
You should look at his stats and all the little things he did to win us the game before you accuse him of being lazy.
No offence.

From NRL

Luke Burt

All Metres Run = 56
All Runs = 7
Dummy Half Runs = 3
Kick Metres = 20
Kick Returns Metres = 8
Hitups = 0
Missed Tackles = 2
Tackle Breaks = 2
Tackles = 2

As from my previous post, not including his goal kicking or the try he scored which was probably 30m, are his stats that good?

I'm ok with him as he takes very little cap space and is dependable but I just don't understand why he is raved about having a good game when I think he has just done his job as a winger.

I started this thread, and if Burt had played the last 5-10 weeks like he played TONIGHT then I wouldn't have made it.

29th minute, we've just had 3 sets of 6 in defence, Burt in to dummy half and scoots out for 10 easy meters (using his footwork in the middle of the field). Gives the big guys a break.

A couple of other dummy half runs, but didn't do much else (Wright REALLY doesn't want to pass him the ball to the extent that he ran the opposite direction every time he had it!!).

But Burt made himself available - went looking for work and was rewarded with the inside ball from Mateo to let him kick over the top and regather for a rather spectacular try.

He even made a few tackles and hustled from marker to make back to back tackles when they were inside our 20.

When our veterans actually TRY HARD like that it sends the right message to the kids.

Ummm... I don't think anything omc gas said at any time on this thread has been harsh or unfair or inaccurate. Burt really went looking to do some work from dummy half which was most pleasing.

Prob the fact they kicked away from him helped because he had to go looking for it to get any action.

Also prob Hayne playing a more understated role helped?

Either way there's no doubt that when Luke adds those touches he can make a huge difference. There's also no doubt he's been well below that standard for the las two months. I think that's all omc has been saying and I agree completely.

By the way his kicking was masterly and kept us a buffer even when they pressed back. That helped us keep our composure a lot.

unfortunately for years now there has always been the 'burt bashers' and i have come to accept it as a 'fact of being an eels fan', I for one, thankfully, am not one of them, and feel sorry for those that are because there are times when you have so much egg on your face its quite funny - but do they ever do a retraction and then give him the praise he deserves? Of course they dont because they will ALWAYS be a 'burt basher'

If you read the thread it's not about 'bashing' Burt.

It's pointing out that he simply looks like he hasn't tried for 2 months. The game last night PROVED that point. When he puts in and does the little things (that so many in this thread argued he was simply incapable of) it really helps the team out.

2 things i noticed last night
1. i thought he had a bung knee.he still skowed plenty of pace when he got in open field for that try.
2. what the f*&k does Jono Wright have with coming back infield every single damn time he got the ball. Ok sure he doesn't have the speed to get around his opposite centre but at least try a draw and pass of run over your opposition, you aren't a small bloke

Wright found some gaps - but he got caught running sideways too often.

We seem to have a general problem with out outside backs. Whether that comes from a lack of leadership in the halves, or direction from the fullback or something else entirely I don't know. But they look disorganised in defence and in attack.

jono wright is allergic to the sideline - every time he gets the ball he runs away from it

but he actually does go looking for a hole to run into, which alot of our players don't do

If Burt had been playing all season like he did at the start of the year (the first 13 rounds I think, maybe a few less) before his injury, we wouldn't be having these discussions at all. He was amazing last night, has been amazing for us the first half of the year, and has only really gone quiet because either he doesn't get the ball coming to him or he is suffering from injury.

I think it might be a case that he isn't confident going down the sideline, and thus he backs himself to go inside-where he actually makes a lot of metres with his runs. He has a few good attributes for a centre, such as a very strong running game and the ability to break tackles, and as a reserve player for our outside backs I really think we should hold onto him; in the coming years he will probably start seeing even more first grade (hopefully).

He seems to be an Ok fill in but at this stage nothing more. If he can get into the sprint work and add some pace to his game so he has the confidence to back himself on the outside, then he may become a good centre. Until that day comes i would never put him in my starting side unless injuries called for it. Going back inside to a sliding defence is rarely going to help you break the line

I hope Burt continues to play to last night's standard for the rest of the season and continues for the remainder of his contract, all the while making me look like a Rugby League illiterate, like so many have before him...;-)
