Burt rarely got the ball because no one gave it to him. When it did come his way, or he ran out of dummy half with it, he made a lot of metres.
You should look at his stats and all the little things he did to win us the game before you accuse him of being lazy.
No offence.
Mate besides his goal kicks (BTW, I would not have anyone else at Parra kick), what else did he do besides the try he scored?
I started this thread, and if Burt had played the last 5-10 weeks like he played TONIGHT then I wouldn't have made it.
29th minute, we've just had 3 sets of 6 in defence, Burt in to dummy half and scoots out for 10 easy meters (using his footwork in the middle of the field). Gives the big guys a break.
A couple of other dummy half runs, but didn't do much else (Wright REALLY doesn't want to pass him the ball to the extent that he ran the opposite direction every time he had it!!).
But Burt made himself available - went looking for work and was rewarded with the inside ball from Mateo to let him kick over the top and regather for a rather spectacular try.
He even made a few tackles and hustled from marker to make back to back tackles when they were inside our 20.
When our veterans actually TRY HARD like that it sends the right message to the kids.
well burty showed you dribblers what he can do tonight. Cometh the hour- cometh the legend!!!!!!
unfortunately for years now there has always been the 'burt bashers' and i have come to accept it as a 'fact of being an eels fan', I for one, thankfully, am not one of them, and feel sorry for those that are because there are times when you have so much egg on your face its quite funny - but do they ever do a retraction and then give him the praise he deserves? Of course they dont because they will ALWAYS be a 'burt basher'
jono wright is allergic to the sideline - every time he gets the ball he runs away from it
but he actually does go looking for a hole to run into, which alot of our players don't do
He seems to be an Ok fill in but at this stage nothing more. If he can get into the sprint work and add some pace to his game so he has the confidence to back himself on the outside, then he may become a good centre. Until that day comes i would never put him in my starting side unless injuries called for it. Going back inside to a sliding defence is rarely going to help you break the lineI think it might be a case that he isn't confident going down the sideline, and thus he backs himself to go inside-where he actually makes a lot of metres with his runs. He has a few good attributes for a centre, such as a very strong running game and the ability to break tackles, and as a reserve player for our outside backs I really think we should hold onto him; in the coming years he will probably start seeing even more first grade (hopefully).
