meh - call a spade a spade - the balls he dropped sucked!! he should have caught them and I'm sure he knows it .... we didn't mount pressure on the tigers to put them away due to our poor handling and dumb passes

his value is as a top defender and that part of his game is great atm (as has nearly always been) .... that sort of player is very important in a TEAM .... he, Hindy, Lowrie and Robo are our gun defenders and its no conicidence we have been strong since they all settled into their roles in the TEAM
which is fair enough and can also be said about Reddys missed tackles.

Neither player should be dropped and we should not even be discussing it after a great team performance

benny had 2 crucial dropped balls... however he should have been the decoy runner on both occasions.
bad passes from robson... his defence is great

I honestly wasn't sure about the move into the backrow for Ben.... didn't think it would suit him at all. That said, his defence in recent weeks has been outstanding and he is playing a real Wagon role in targetting specific players and putting on the hurt. Ellis would have been sick of the sight of him by the end of Friday night. His kick chase has been great and he has jammed some players in the in goal to give us repeat sets that have been very important.

He dropped two balls - one of which was intended for Hayne however Robson went short as Hayne was marked by about three players. It was quite clear from the replay that Ben was not expecting the pass. Probably something he needs to work on as in the future Hayne will be again marked heavily. It was clear had he caught the ball he would have gone close to scoring.

I think on that move they should consider Hayne doubling back behind Robson for an inside pass every so often, so that it doesn't get too predictable

or dribbling the ball in the in goal for Benny to pounce on and if he doesn't we probably would trap them in goal or a penalty as Benny was held back.

Ben Smith was absolutely outstanding in defense, and also in leadership on Friday.

We were under pressure like no other time this season for the first 20 and IMO Ben was our best on ground in that time. He held us together defensively, was aggressive on kick chase when we were losing the field position game massively.

And FFS would the usual suspects pelase stop trying to find ways to get rid of Grothe? Once again he showed that his workrate and power in games where we are being dominated in field position are more important than any of our forwards bar Fui.

How you would come in here trying to leave him out after that game and this season just astounds me .... but when you consider that both Bartman and Lingard were happy to let Fui go at the start of the season shouldn't be surprised really.

No, you're wrong, Bigfella; I wouldn't be happy to let Grothe go at all. Not at all. BUT - I'd be far less happy to let any of the other backs go, that's all. Make of that what you will.

The defence will follow Jarryd - it won't matter if it is on that play or another. What Robson tried to do was in essence the right play. The execution let it down in the end. If they go the same way next week it may pay off.

Hayne will be watched like a hawk every week now - he'll still make his metres and even turn in plays like the one that won the game. It is up to the other players around him to take the advantage of him being the target.

yeah i agree - its right to hit ben with surprise passes - it actually worked earlier (later?) in the game and ben almost ended up through for a try

bens gotta be ready to take the pass even if its a bit dodgy - catches win matches

This is exactly what we need to bank on! It has worked a few times with his combination with Burt where Hayne has drawn several chasers and thrown Burt the ball into a massive hole!

I would like to see them try this with Hayne throwing it to either Burt or Grothe, draw the defenders and then pass to either of them.

I would also like to see Hayne and Mateo run the same side of the field occassionally in attack especially around the half way mark and both draw the defenders and get it on the outside to either Inu and Burt or Reddy and Grothe!

Imagine defenders seeing Mateo and Hayne running down their side?

Hasn't anyone noticed.................. Ben Smith was on heat, he was in the midst of his mating season. He had no interest in catching balls, he had his heart set on making love to Ellis. The way Benny was shoving his body onto Ellis with such ferocity was actually Benny's mating call trying to woo Ellis. Benny was trying to spread Ellis's legs apart to have intercourse but Ellis was playing hard to get.

Good ol Benny didn't give up... he is a persistent bastard but after 80 minutes of wooing Ellis he dropped him cold, told Ellis he was as cold as ice and that he was in love with Hayne, that Hayny was his one and only true love..............

So Ellis began sooking and took it out on Hayny as any jealous weakling would and you saw what Hayny said to Ellis while standing over him as the dominant Alpha male at the end of the game....."Stay away from my sheila, and if you come near my lover again I'll xxxxxxx knock your lights out you sexual deviate".

And we all saw what happened then...... Ellis threw a tantrum and cried and cried and cried hoping someone will take pity on him.

That all sounds good, Bartman, but I seriously doubt that Eric Grothe could play in the forwards and offer anything much. The defensive demands would be far too great for him, I think. You know what I'd do? With a backline like that - and in a very controversial move - I'd drop Eric Grothe all together. Because I sure as hell wouldn't drop or relocate any of the others. It's going to be difficult to fit everyone in next year - unless injuries solve that problem for us. Another way would be to drop Jeff Robson, move Mortimer to half and try Tahu at five-eight. Have Kris Keating play the Kevin Kingston role. Whichever way you look at it, one very good player will have to make way.
I kind of agree with you there Lingard... the way I see it, with Inu's recent resurgence in form (and the weight of his contract) Grothe is the one to give way initially next year.

I was just trying to find a place for him, and feel that perhaps he could make a similar transition to Ben Smith?

Grothe seems to not be a good reader in lateral defence on the wing (when to move in/stay out, when to move up/drop back/turn around for kicks behind). But in the middle as part of a defensive line doing front on stuff he might have a bench role, and his durability could be used in the backs during a game if needed (through injury).

Anyway, some decent depth is lovely to have.

This is a dilemma as all backs are firing.

Problem with Grothe is whether his back can handle all the hard work

It is also why I have pushed Hayne to be 6 although I think at 1, he remains fresher and can observe how the game is going.

1. Burt
2. Reddy
3. Tahu
4. INU
5. Grothe
6. Hayne
7. Mortimer
13. Mateo
12. Shackleton
11. Hindy
10. Poore.
9. MK
8. Caylo

14. KK
15. FFMM
16. B.Smith
17. Mannah

KK, although showed some form at 7, really only played a few games there. And Morts has taken the bull by the horn.

The problem is that none of the backs can play in the pack and Burt, who I would like to make as the 14. but I worry about his defense.

This would be my real preference but somehow need to find a place for Burt to defend.

1. Hayne
2. Reddy
3. Tahu
4. Inu
5. Grothe
6. Mort
7. KK

14. Burt

The other thing is that both INU and Tahu are left centres. Who will switch to the right unless INU plays left wing?

Lets see how this team pans out for the rest of the season. What will happen if they win the GF or at least are close runners up. If they do well then there is no need to make hardly any changes to this team for the start of next year. DA is big on rewarding achievements so whose to say that Tahu, Poore & Shackleton will even get in to the top 13 until injuries transpire or poor form strikes any of the 2009 squad during the 2010 trials or early rounds.

1. Hayne
2. Burt
3. Inu
4. Reddy
5. Grothe
6. Mortimer
7. Robson (Eels crazy not to resign this successful halfback)
8. Cayless
9. Keating
10. Moimoi
11. Hindmarsh
12. Smith
13. Mateo

14. Kris Keating
15. Poore
16. Mannah
17. Tahu (bring him on to destroy tired forwards and backs)
18. Lowrie (Eels crazy not to resign this successful lock)
19. Shackleton (he will get his run at some stage of the season)

Sad to see Kingston go but maybe he could be purchased later this year but more than likely he will be gobbled up by another club.

There is enough flexibility in this squad of 17 that can cover for any injury during a match.

Casper, surely poore, shacks and tahu all would start, the money we have invested in them, why would they play off the bench or even wenty?

It doesn't matter if they win the GF, Tahu and Poore would definitely start unless injured.

The momentum changes after the off season. Look at Manly.

Lets see what DA does.

Team moral and respect for the coach would be enhanced with DA sticking to a winning side as his first 13 and besides what is wrong with bringing on this bench after 15/20 minutes.... Poore, Mannah/Shackleton, Tahu, Kris Keating as lethal strike weapons and powerful explosive defenders (not Keating as yet)????

With Fui causing havoc and Cayless 2nd phase offloads tiring out the defence you bring on these 3 destroyers and many games will be over by half-time.

There are more powerful beings than DA.

If DA had his way, I really don't think Mateo would be in the squad.

Same goes next year. The Shack could miss out but Poore and Tahu, what $600K+ between them on the bench. I really, really doubt it.
