Doesn't matter whether he squared upto someone and belted him or just smacked him from behind, a punch is a punch. The only difference it makes where the other player was positioned is in like a moral stance, i.e you're not considered as much of a coward if you hit someone while they're looking at you. Either way, punching someone is punching someone no matter where they're facing.

On the topic, the suspension was deserved.
