Bye bye Ta'ai

Blockbusting second rower Ukuma Ta'ai is set to leave the Warriors at the end of this season, with the Mt Smart club deciding not to renew his contract.

It is understood that Ta'ai, 25, would have preferred to stay in Auckland but the Warriors have been unable to find a place for him in their roster, given their surfeit of forward riches. His destination in 2013 is still to be finalised, but there are said to be four NRL clubs as well as several Superleague outfits chasing his signature.

"I can confirm that Ukuma won't be at the Warriors next season," his agent Peter Brown told the Herald on Sunday.

Ta'ai, who came through the junior grades at the Mt Albert Lions, made his NRL debut in round three of 2009 and has since clocked up 50 appearances (seven tries). He flitted between first grade and the Vulcans last year but performed strongly in several important matches.

It would have been a tough call for the Warriors, as Ta'ai is one of the hardest players to tackle at the club and is particularly mobile for a big (105kg) man. He is tough to the point of being fearless, has the ability to offload and is a strong, punishing defender. On the debit side, he can get exposed on the edge of the ruck and is sometimes susceptible to handling lapses.

Ta'ai was one of just 12 players to feature in all of the first 10 matches of this season, though he was used mainly off the interchange bench, averaging around 26 minutes playing time with five hit-ups and 13 tackles per game and a total of 10 tackle breaks and one try.

After a barnstorming performance against the Roosters in round 10, blighted by his concession of two late penalties, he was not selected in the 17 for the clashes with the Broncos and Tigers. He was originally named for the Vulcans earlier this week but later withdrawn from the line-up and didn't feature in their 26-18 loss to the Sharks yesterday.

Many league pundits would like to see Ta'ai used at prop but, with the Warriors' 'famous four' (Ben Matulino, Sam Rapira, Jacob Lillyman and Russell Packer) and this season's emergence of Sione Lousi, that was always an unlikely prospect.

Instead he has been used in the back row but like Lewis Brown earlier this year has now found himself surplus to requirements.
I wonder where he'll end up? I think he'd go better in the Superleague.

Shame. He's pretty dynamic off the bench. But we are spoiled for choice maybe.
Good luck to him wherever he ends up.

I won't be losing any sleep over this one. Always had the potential, but too many errors and stupid decisions in his game.

Should be good enough to get into an NRL line up, but I think he'd be better off in the UK.

Good decision by the management imo. Now just to find a replacement for Manu....I kid lol...

I like the direction Bluey's heading in...he got rid of Inu who was a liability at times, he's getting rid of Ta'ai who is also prone to
brain explosions that cost his team, now if Bluey can only muster the courage to get rid of the biggest liability in the comp in
manu, we'll be solid as a rock next season....without those 3, who would lose us games on a consistent basis??

:?

Did Peter Brown or hitman82 write this? It sounds like a sales pitch.

Kinda can't believe Ukuma has been around for 3+ years and played 50 games tbh, he still kinda seems like that new guy who hasn't quite cracked it and whose presence in the side is somewhat confusing but not totally offensive. No big loss.

Good decision imo. You can only have so many 50/50 players in one club, guys who do something bad for everything they do good. Inu, Ta'ai, even Maloney to a certain extent are capable of coming up with those coach killing moments that can kill a team on any given day.

Now we just have Manu.

Reminded me of too much of Elphame Lauaki, good player of the bench but prone to errors and giving away penalties at crucial times.

Shame to see him gone but he was the weakest link in the forward stocks. Hopefully it means Steve Rapira will be getting some game time soon.

Too many handling errors and penalties for the level of output we got from Ukuma. Big shame, he certainly has the physical tools to be quite a good player. Good luck to the big man.

I'm really hoping the player cull of the last couple of weeks means we're making a serious attempt to hold onto people like Steve R and Omar. Re the latter I'm still not convinced by Fish yet at first grade level so I'd really like to have him there.

Yeah I'm in the "Not too worried, hot and cold player" group. I would love to see how he would go at the Storm..
