You'd think that the even number of teams this year would serve to wake up whoever it is with their hands on the wheel that giving points for the bye serves no purpose.

It never has (except maybe 1925, but not really even then). Points for the bye is necessary only when teams receive a differing number of byes.

"Points for byes" is like having a shower in a raincoat.

It's a psychological thing.

Imagine being 2 points out of the 8 heading into a final round bye (with no points). You'd be spewing (even though you had no right to be). This way it feels like it's always in a team's control.

yeah but you had your bye earlier in the year and got your 2 points then, all it means is at the end of the season everyone finishes 2 points higher then they should, there is not point in giving 2 points to everyone.

It is like giving everyone at the start of the season 2 points to start on just because your in the competition, how stupid is that?

I think it punishes teams not giving out the two points.
Like, it's not your fault that your team isn't playing this week, so why shouldn't you get the points?

Teams that have the bye as later on in the season get overrated when it comes to playoff time.

eg "they'll probably make it, they have a bye in hand"

That may have been the case before, but not anymore as nobody will have a bye in hand after Origin 3.
