Call to Younger NRL Fans up to 25 Years of Age

Just to remind those other than the 2 aforementioned trolls, this was the topic at hand:-

It seems to me that many NRL fans in this age bracket have never really had a great deal to do with the international game of rugby league.

In some respects, their main passion for the game will have been along the lines of club loyalties or State rivalries.

That is fully understandable given the fact that rugby league has sadly neglected its status as an international sport (first earned in 1904) in many ways since the dark days of the Super League War in the mid-1990s.

Some will not know that the first World Cup in rugby league was held a full third of a century before its union equivalent.

Or that the first Rugby League World Cup in Australia, held 51 years ago in 1957, had an average attendance of just under 35,000, and an opening match attendance of more than 50,000 for the France v Great Britain game on a wet SCG.

Some may not recall the epic nature of the Australia-Great Britain/England Test rivalry that has nurtured the game since 1908. Or that for the period between 1921-1949 inclusive, the northern hemisphere's hold on the Ashes could not be broken by this great rugby league nation of Australia.

The 2008 Rugby League World Cup represents an opportunity for NRL fans, especially those up to the age of 25, to really connect with the international game of rugby league in this country.

Recent World Cups and most international tournaments have been staged outside this country.

I urge those of you who have not yet learned the true joys that can be gleaned from the international game to support the RLWC this and next month and to make it the great event in Australia it deserves to be...

I've been to 3 World cup finals and 2 World cups. The "smaller" nation games are usually alot more fun. Get out to see some of the lesser known teams, they often serve up some amazing RL!
Another reason to get to some of these games will be the cheaper ticket prices.

One of the few times I am gutted I don't live on the East coast. I'd be at most games if I did!

There are over 5,000 poms booked with organised tours and lots more making their own way so the England games will have cracking atmospheres.

If England and NZ step up, it will be fantastic for league. It hasn't happened in my lifetime though and I'm 35. Forget the one off NZ fluke.

NZ and the poms must bring the goods to the table.

I don't think you can call it a one-off fluke when they backed it up the following year with a Golden Point loss in the final!

The NSW selectors have been gradually killing Origin for me. I'm not interested in seeing overhyped, underperforming players compete against genuine stars.

I'm not going to be within a 20 hour flight of Australia during the WC, unfortunately, but I am looking to see if I can catch the games live, somehow...

Hopefully it'll be competitive. More blowouts are the last thing RL needs.

Shouldn't this be in the Int. RL section, though?

There were Maccas ads during the Kangaroo Tour Tests in 1990.

Scrolling across the bottom, or quick 30 sec jobs cut into a break in play so that the action wasn't disrupted. The Tests were live and otherwise without ad breaks during play.

Believe it or not Channel 10 did a good job of covering international (in fact all) rugby league in 1990. Hughes and Morrow commentating with Rex still hanging around a bit.

Unfortunately, the station nearly went bust a few years later despite getting super ratings for the rugby league and sweet FA for just about everything else on the channel.

 The only player in the NSW side that actually put in, and you claim its a joke of a squad. Go perve on cricketers you dunce...best squad in years, sensible selections all round. No complaints from me.

International sport is a worthy spectacle but it's not the same for me:

- You spend most of your team rooting for some players and against others, then those allegiances and turned upside down because they put on new shirts.

- There is so little time to connect with your new team as opposed to your old, faithful club. The few weeks are up and the team is dormant again.

I'm over 30 & the closest I ever got to attending an international game was watching England vs Parra & England vs Illawarra Steelers in the 90's but this year I'm finally getting to an international game (Samoa v Tonga) & I am expecting a good pysical game. If there isn't at least 1 brawl thought I will be a bit disapointed
