Living in Melbourne I don't think he has a choice. You're an outcast on society there if you don't adopt an AFL team.
Matters not where they live players are as entitled to have a life outside RL . . . pity the focus is on either the bad things they get up to or the ridicule jealous idiots try to construe

So much salt from people towards a player who has done so much for the game for 15 years.

If anything this is a positive for RL in that he is such a figurehead being shown on a rival code's broadcast. I would bet that it gets some of those viewers at least somewhat interested in the progress of the Melbourne Storm and watching more of their games live or on television when they are on. I would have no doubt you flogs would get uppity if it were a top Sydney AFL player being shown on a RL broadcast in the same situation.
Don't take the wankers too seriously, Smiths detractors are but a piss in the ocean of admirers

No-one should care if he moonlights as a trainer at some AFL games. I certainly don't.

There are plenty of legitimate concerns regarding salary cap/contracts, tackling/wrestling manoeuvres and the Piece de Resistance over the MacKinnon incident.

All of these take away from his obvious RL talent, and by all reports, administrative talents.

Can't stand the bloke, at all. As a player or a person. Spent the best part of 10 years putting arm and leg locks onto opposing players. Was the chief exponent of "The wrestle" which got me as close to flicking the sport as I've ever been. Gives the impression that he doesn't give a shit about the sport.

The only player I've ever wished a career-ending injury on.

Will never, ever be an immortal in my eyes, let alone the best player ever. I will go to my grave never having applauded that prick even once.

Anyone that thinks that Smith knew nothing about the systematic rorting of the cap at Melbourne needs intense psychiatric help.

But the absolute worst thing about him is that he, and his cohorts made me cheer for Manly in Grand Finals, twice.

It's dumbfounding how wearing a Maroon jersey 3 times a year is enough to convince so many people that all the above is "not his go".

Captain Cleanskin isn't stupid. He's a smart guy. Smart enough to realise how lucky he is to be:

A) a darling of the RL media and,
B) QLD captain

Which= plenty of people dumb enough to fall for his bullshit.

I wouldn't go so far as to wish injury on him, but I could see the irony in him going down with a career-ender and the opposition players showing him as much concern as he showed for a certain ex Knights player in the same situation...and for perfect justice, that cretin with the "Rise for Cameron" sign at Origin a few years back would have a front row seat to it all

Salary cap cheating is all the ideas I need to have.
It is as simple as that.
Legacy = tarnished.
My best mate is a one eyed Eels supporter, you've got nothing compared to what he dished out in 2010. My only answer was to say Melbourne's biggest mistake was getting caught and the big name players would've stayed without the added gratuities . . . poaching is all I care about

. . . I still hope your mob don't get caught for whatever it is they've done, as long as it doesn't steal from another club

Australian Rugby League captain & RLPA board member wearing a jacket emblazoned with AusKick logo
e0cf6270bba9f9a0d263e0b072c2a86a

That actually disgusts me and makes me think even less of him. Scumbag.

The bloke has no respect for the game whatsoever. His kid can play whatever he likes, I don't have a problem with that, but I have a large problem with the current Australian captain wearing an AFL jacket to an AFL game.

Maybe he's confused and doesn't know that AFL is a competitor to Rugby League in Australia?

You obviously didn't watch the Melbourne press conference, which incidentally go far longer than other club pressers, probably just a popularity thing . . . Smith explains himself well enough for me but nothing will appease f**kwits like yourself

Brilliant player no doubt, but wait until he's been retired a few years to see if he's the best ever. The 2011 Lockyer wankfest got pretty sickening at times but since then his legacy has lowered a fair bit. Nobody really talking about him as the next immortal or how his team struggles without him. Thurston is similar in the 2nd regard too, the Cowboys have been as good without him this season as they were with him and Queensland in Origin 3 did fine without him.

I'm obviously bias but Johns is the best I've seen. He had more affect on the result of a game than any player. Smith is closer to him than Lockyer and Thurston because like Joey he's dominant on both sides of the ball. The rabble that my club has become since he retired as well as NSW having won only 1 series of 12 since he finished up is a testament to how much they relied on him to win football games, not to contribute to, but to get the result almost single handedly. I can't imagine any player past, current future having that level of impact on the teams they play in.

This 'best' thing is all a bit of fun and as you say time changes everything which is why I ignore the 'immortals' bullshit. The game Joey played is not the same game Smith/Thurston play, doesn't take much to change circumstances.

Imo Smith is by far the best at what is required of him, there have been many players over the years that have been the best at what was required of them at the time. We need a Hall Of Fame and nothing else to record these achievements

The stats don't lie, he is undoubtedly the best hooker ever to play the game, arguably the best captain the game has ever seen and most probably the best player in my 4 decades of watching the game. It will be a sad day when he calls time.

Can you imagine that buddy wanker wearing a Play NRL jacket while refereeing a junior league game at halftime of an NRL game in Sydney? Me neither, it's absurd and Smith can't be naive enough to think the AFL wouldn't be trading on his profile in rugby league in doing so. I wonder if he cleared it with the NRL? He should have had the decency to wear something less conspicuous. At least he topped it off by telling a public gathering at a storm function, at which media was present, that he watches more AFL than NRL.

All this from a guy campaigning for a share of the games revenues.
