From 2003 on, Newcastle were in decline. Odavis and Matt Gidley retired, BK and Tahu left - replaced by Kirk Reynoldson  Newcastle did have great sides, but never over the salary cap like Melbourne. IMHO you have to downplay Smiths club form from 06-10, because they had an unfair advantage. Any hooker would shine with a better team than anyone else had.

BTW, you do recall the Joey Miracle game in 2005 against the "crap" QLD side (as MF inferred)? Queensland's spine was Slater, Lockyer, Thurston, Smith. NSW's spine was Minichiello, Anasta, Johns, Bedurus. F*cking Anasta

Yes and Newcastle went into decline thereafter

QLD had such stars as Berrigan and Webb in the starting 13, Slater was in such good form he got dropped.

How about Squad 3?

Slater, Waqa, Chambers, Nielsen, O'Neil, Widdop, Cronk, Bromwich, Johns, Norrie, Proctor, Hoffman, Lowrie. Manu, Hinchcliffe, Lowe, Fa'aoso.

Since y'know that's the squad Smith legitimately won a premiership with.

On Roids I say the Knights.... On the big $$$ I'd say Storm.. Which is worse?

Mad Dog was the only one on roids in 01 - and it was legal. Tell me again about Rodney Howe (Melbourne's other cheating episode)
QLD had such stars as Berrigan and Webb in the starting 13, Slater was in such good form he got dropped.
Wasnt Berrigan the Broncos fans beloved genius who's form the next September was a massive factor in their premiership win? Wasnt that back when Webb was in form and the enforcer in the Maroons pack? As for Slater - wikipedia says......
Slater once again impressed in his 3rd NRL season. Once again Slater was picked for the Queensland State of Origin team, this time at his preferred position of fullback. Slater returned for the second game in Sydney which saw the return of Andrew Johns, who spearheaded a New South Wales' victory. Despite losing the match, Slater took advantage. of a knock-on from the Blue's Anthony Minichiello to score a length of the field try during the match. Slater was dumped from the Queensland side for the deciding third game in Brisbane which led to outrage from some Maroons fans.[3]
It then goes on to say Slater scored 20 tries that season. Yeah, he was really sh*t - Anasta was far better

Webb " in form"

Once again my point completely proved, every NSW player apparently was complete shit, every QLDer the greatest ever at their respective position

On paper, that spine looks fantastic but in context Slater, JT & Smith were a year or so off their prime.

In fairness though Berrigan and Webb were deserved selections at the time. In hindsight, the backline wasn't what Queensland needed but they would go onto fix that the next series and look how well it turned out for them.

Smith will not only be an Immortal, he makes Johns look ordinary. Time is what Smith has in bucket loads, Smith makes those around him look important! Slater, Cronk and myself owe Smith for our success..
How quickly you have forgotten .. it's only been 10 years, surely not that long to remember just how ridiculously talented Andrew Johns was.
