Canberra Raiders say they will welcome Todd Carney back to the club

Canberra appear to have finally forgiven Todd Carney for his sins, admitting they would be happy for the Sydney Roosters fullback to return to the Raiders.

Carney, sacked by Canberra in 2008 for a series of alcohol-related offences, turned in a man-of-the-match performance against South Sydney on Sunday in his first game back in the NRL.

He is contracted at Bondi Junction for three years, but Raiders chairman John McIntyre admitted the club would be happy to accommodate Carney if he was interested in returning to the Green Machine.

"You don't burn bridges in this game and the door's always open," McIntyre said.

"I've always known that there was a potential risk that he could come back to haunt us. If he keeps going the way he is, that may well happen, but we're certainly not death-riding the fellow."

Sydney Roosters chief executive Steve Noyce said Carney was only one game into a deal that didn't expire until the end of 2012.

However, he admitted he was happy Carney had his life under control, with the former wild child making a new-year pact with some of his teammates, including Mitchell Pearce and Nate Myles, to stay off alcohol.

"The trick in life is learning from your mistakes, isn't it?" Noyce said.

"Unfortunately, from time to time we all make mistakes and the smart people will learn from them."

McIntyre, who was part of the board that sacked Carney after he refused to adhere to strict alcohol guidelines the club wanted in his contract, said he was happy the former star player had his life back under control.

After he was sacked by Canberra, the NRL said it would not register a contract for Carney if another club tried to sign him for the 2009 season, forcing him to ply his trade as a park footballer in the far north Queensland town of Atherton.

He returned to the NRL with the Roosters, switching from the halves to fullback. Now his trial form and the performance in the opening round against the Rabbitohs make him an early contender for buy of the season.

Although he has had no contact with Carney since the club sacked him, McIntyre said he would be happy to shake his hand when the two clubs faced each other in April.

"Of course we're happy for him - he's a talent," McIntyre said.

McIntyre said Carney would one day don the green and gold for Australia, but a more probable scenario was an appearance in the sky blue of New South Wales this season.

If early form is any guide, Carney could definitely be part of the Blues' bid to end their four-year Origin drought.

What a dumb thing to say... Why not just say "his a good player and we need him back after watching him play for another team".

Imagine the raiders with their young and skillfull backline, their young and skillfull foward pack, and Campese and Carney in the halves playing at their full potential. Would be one of the most promising teams going around and you would be fighting for a premiership within the next couple of years.

your right hornby, thats why it was so devastating when he got in trouble again he is the perfect player for the likes of Croker, Vidot, Dugan etc we would almost be certain for the top 8 with Carney firing at the club

Why after they sacked him in 2008 would they suck up to carney and think he owes us something??
Sure we need to sign a quality halfback, but carney,no thanks, stay put at the roosters.

On paper it would look good and when Carney fires it would. But I still remember the times when that same halves pairing struggled to click. Maybe it would be different now that Campese is a superstar as well but hard to say.

Carney is a 5/8 , campo is a 5/8. they have played in the same team and when Carney played 1/2 he wasnt anywhere near as good as he was when playing 5/8.
He wont come back , nor should we pursue him either. It is only now that he realised that he was a f*kwit on the drink and its only now he realised its his last chance. Its a shame he was a bit slow working that out.

We as a club made the right decision at the time , for us and for Todd.

If he lasts the season incident free, then maybe it will look like he has turned his life around.

Carney will never come back to the raiders anyways.

Yeah we shouldnt be bending over for Todd now. We've always known he was a damn fine player, even when other clubs fans were telling us he was garbage back in 05. But we shouldn't act like a needy ex and drop hints that we want him back. He f*cked us over. Sure i'd like to see him come home to where he belongs, but only if he approached us and apologized to the club and fans.

I'd welcome him back in a heartbeat.

I don't give a sh*t what he does off the field if I am able to go back to enjoying watching the Raiders play.

I feel bad for the young guys at our club honestly...

Carney being the absolute sh*t bag that he is gets the sack and then one game at another game and the media are saying his a bolter for SOO. so basically it looks like "stuff up or just leave the raiders and you will be noticed".

The media is screwing us over, they talk non stop about ex raiders player how they are origin material but when they are with us nobody knows who they are. No wonder so many players refuse to come here...there career would amount to nothing in relation to rep honours.

Also for anyone thats bound to say that the reason they are not noticed is due to them playing bad when with us...please Carney was killing teams with us.

Yeah no thanks... He has only given up the drink because he set one of his friends on fire (so the Raiders should have had a six step plan where we set his mates on fire if he didn't play by the rules and aparantly he would have been all for it)... Once the media starts shooting even more smoke up his arse you really think he isn't going to give in and "celebrate" it a bit? I would be amazed if he lasts 10 weeks with-out doing something f**king stupid... Granted the Roosters most likely have a better shot at covering it up and it's easier to "lose" the truth in a place like Sydney than a "country town" like Canberra is sometimes where everyone appears, or at least via proxy, knows everyone else...

Wow- my thoughts to an extent. Although the last time i really enjoyed watching the raiders Carney was nowhere to be seen (end run in 2008 finals).

I hope he continues to go well. We've got a great fullback at the moment, and a really capable 5/8 who is every bit as much a superstar as carney when playing well. We need a halfback- and to my memory Carney was never one of those.

Good luck for the future Todd, but I think the boys we have atm are the better fit for the club.
