Captaincy

With Gower making an arse of himself again on rep duty, the question must be asked, is he fit for the captaincy?

Don't get me wrong I thought he was the best man for the job but this could prove a major blow for us and I have lost some respect for him.

If he was stood down (perhaps just for the rest of the season) who would be your candidates?

I'd have Priddis or Clinton.

Has it been reported exactly how he was involved yet? Sorry I am little slow at getting all the information to this yet. But so far I have only come across that he was seen leaving the back entrance of the building they were being questioned in? And something about 2 cabs?

Yeah i said that in the controversey corner lainey. I think his name is Chris Johns the NSW team manager, I'm sure he stated a few times last night when asked that they were not told *not* to go out or given a curfew.

Sure it does take commonsense when out to act like a decent individual and I agree with House's fining for being disruptive along with Mason but I would like to know how they can be fined for going out? :?

Apparently Gower, Minichello and Wing only went to the casino. It was not mentioned that they behaved badly.

Yeah...i've managed to read a bit more about it now. Found a topic in Controversey Corner about ARL Action and there's a post in there of what they did and were fined for. It's still not too clear though.

This is from the Home page of League Unlimited:

Minichiello dumped from NSW Origin squad
Written by: Troy Dodds
05/21/04
New South Wales officials have taken a firm stance against misbehaving players, today throwing the Blues preparation into chaos by dropping a further player from next Wednesday night’s first State of Origin match at Telstra Stadium.

Roosters star Anthony Minichiello was sacked from the Blues squad tonight following a marathon six hour meeting that involved ARL officials, Willie Mason, Mark O’Meley, Craig Gower, Craig Wing, Trent Waterhouse and of course Minchiello.

Minichiello defied an order not to take his mobile phone to a team bonding session on Tuesday night. That defiance indirectly led to the phone message sex scandal that resulted in Dragons star Mark Gasnier being sacked from the Origin squad.

Gasnier used Minichiello’s phone to make the 3:41am call to the woman, who he didn’t know.

In addition, five NSW players have been fined – two of them for visiting what ARL official John Chalk described as an “inappropriate place”. Chalk did not confirm nor deny the possibility of that place being a brothel.

Trent Waterhouse, Willie Mason, Craig Gower, Craig Wing and Mark O’Meley were all fined $3,000 each, with Mason earning himself an additional $3,000 in fines for his behaviour at a team appearance in Liverpool yesterday as well as for his behaviour on a public bus on Wednesday. Trent Waterhouse was fined an additional $2,000 for his behaviour on that public bus.

ARL officials, who held a press conference tonight four hours after it was initially scheduled, said players would not be allowed to leave the team hotel during the camp from now on unless given specific authorisation by team management.

But team management themselves could find themselves in hot water, with confirmation that all positions are “under review.”

ARL officials were grilled by media representatives at the press conference over the nature of the fines and the failure to sack members of team management, which had been rumoured throughout the afternoon. The constant response from John Chalk was that team management was “under review” and that the fines were the toughest possible that they could impose on players.

A replacement for Minichiello has not yet been named. Team management as well as coach Phil Gould will make that decision over the weekend.

Minichiello as well as the players fined are understood to be meeting with their managers, with most expected to release statements this evening.

I wonder if Panthers Management will add anything extra?

As far as I can work out, all Gowie did was go to the casino. We all know he likes to have a bit of a gamble, he does own race horses after all but I think Trent might be a different story. #-o

This is quoted from PI. And it explains it in more detail.

DETAILS OF BLUES PLAYERS' NIGHT OUT
May 21 - The NRL website has published a detailed account of incidents for which Anthony Minichiello has been dismissed from the NSW Origin team and for which several others have been fined. Here is the report ...

The NSWRL has dismissed a second player, Anthony Minichiello, from the team for Wednesday’s (May 26) State of Origin Match and imposed fines on five other players.

The five players: Willie Mason, Trent Waterhouse, Craig Wing, Craig Gower, and Mark O’Meley were fined $3,000 for unprofessional behaviour in leaving the team hotel after the side returned en-masse from an evening out.

Willie Mason and Trent Waterhouse have been fined an additional $2,000 for their further actions, which ended with the players travelling on a public bus in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Willie Mason has also been fined an additional $1,000 for having signed another player’s name during an autograph session.

Minichiello’s dismissal is on the basis that he took a telephone out on the night, contrary to team instruction, and that he was observed in the presence of Mark Gasnier as telephone calls were made. It has been established beyond doubt that the offensive call was not made from a taxi.

The Board today has also determined that all team management, security positions and team protocols will be reviewed at the conclusion of Origin 1.

In the meantime players will not be allowed to leave the team hotel after the evening meals unless specifically approved by team management.

The actions follow a further 24 hours of investigation, which revealed:

That when the team returned to its hotel shortly after 3:00am on Wednesday morning, everyone went to their rooms and team security checked off each player’s arrival.

Nine players then changed and went out a second time.

Two players, Ryan O’Hara and Andrew Ryan accompanied a team security guard in search of a meal but returned soon after without incident. They have not been penalised.

The offensive phone call that saw Mark Gasnier stood down was made from the phone of Anthony Minichiello from outside the team hotel in Coogee and not from a taxi.

Enhanced recordings of the message show clearly that another voice was on the taped message that led to Mark Gasnier’s dismissal.

Only one voice however directed offensive remarks to the woman.

Anthony Minichiello, Craig Gower, Mark Gasnier and Trent Waterhouse were in one taxi.

Mark O’Meley, Willie Mason, Craig Wing and a security guard were in the other taxi.

The players later split into separate groups.

Gasnier, Mason and Waterhouse are believed to have travelled together to continue drinking. Craig Wing returned to the hotel.

Gower, O’Meley and Minichiello attended the Star City Casino.

Willie Mason signed the name of a team-mate at an autograph signing session.

The NSWRL Board held two meetings today, one to authorise team management to require players to attend an investigation at Phillip Street, and the second to review the day’s investigations.

“At the conclusion of that process the Board is of the belief that it has pieced together as accurate a picture as is possible of the events,” NSWRL General Manager, Mr Geoff Carr, said today.

“It is unfortunate that yesterday that quality of the speaker phone used to listen to the phone message did not allow us to detect the second voice and I apologise to all concerned for being incorrect in relation to that matter.

“I accept that the public are entitled to feel disappointed at the time it has taken to complete this investigation and it’s been unfortunate that we were not able to establish all the facts as quickly as we would like.

“However the Board today has shown the seriousness with which it is treating this matter.

“Players have lost their place in the team, others have been fined and the positions of senior team officials and security personnel is to be reviewed.

“The NSWRL will insist on greater scrutiny in all team arrangements going forward and the message to all players is that the camp environment will change dramatically and that players will be accountable.

“Again the NSWRL apologises to the woman who received the phone message, as I did personally yesterday evening, and to all Rugby League fans and players who have been embarrassed by the performance of some team members.

“They have our assurance that such behaviour will not be tolerated at representative level in the future.”

I want to raise the question on the security who were reported by this article to be around when the phone call was made and to what Chris Johns said on the Footy Show to what Phil Gould just said on Ch.9 tonight and the above report about players being counted and checked for.

From the impression i got from Chris Johns the players were *not* told to go out yet I get the impression that Blues management were highlighting that they were all taken back to the hotel and *expected* to remain there. Bit of a difference in the stories there. ;-)

Did you mean to put here "they were not told *not* to go out." the way you have typed it, it looks like they did have a curfew. Sorry, I'm being picky.

disgraceful, not penrith like.

nothing should really happen to gower, but he, waterhouse, gasnier and minichello were in one cab. Those two got sacked so gower and waterhouse must have came bloody close.

Munky from what I have read so far Gower has not done anything wrong. All he did was go out to a Casino. :? What's wrong with that?

He didnt defy rules and take his mobile phone. He did not make the call. He was not disruptive on a public bus. Surveillance cameras reported him to be at the Star City Casino and there have been no reports of any disruptive behaviour whilst he was there.

The offensive phone call has been reported to have been made outside the team hotel at Coogee and not in the taxi by the ARL ... yet the papers are reporting it differently and considering how the media love to disillusion us  at times I think I will believe what i have read on the NRL site and the PI site as to where the call took place.

I want to know what happened to the team security guard that travelled in the 2nd cab?

What's the point in having team security guards with them if they are still finding themselves in trouble. So much for that idea! #-o

And yes lainey you are right i forgot another *not* in my sentence. It was late! #-o
