so that drops us down to 21, 19 with Robbo and Reddy gone, 18 until Poore came back last night. Are we in trouble with our 2nd tier cap with all the players outside the 25 that have debuted?

If we're under the first tier cap for this year which we reportedly are it shouldn't really matter.

oh dear.

Another member of our magnificent recruitment plan of 2010 bites the dust.

Maguire will be next !

if he "retired" with a golden handshake though the payment would have to go somewhere. They couldn't allow a low contract value and then have a player retire with golden handshake to make up any shortfall.

This may explain why we are under cap pressure next year. Also explains the need for Shubert to be involved in Tonga sign on for next year.

If they retire the rest of their contract is null and void. That's why he's 'retired' and not just 'released'.

Pretty sure a player retiring has no effect on the cap for the following year

really?? I would of thought that unless he's been given a job outside footy at the club then the pay out figure whatever that is would be still under the cap, now in saying that, I have no idea whether there is a pay out figure or not.

Didn't work that way for Gasnier.

I would assume that he will get part of his money for next year. The club and his manager would have come up with some sort of deal.

It comes down to whether he's been pushed to retire or not. He may have 'retired' so to speak... but it's highly likely that he's been told he's unwanted for next year and the club agreed to pay a substantial amount of his 2012 contract as a termination fee. If so that would count under next year's cap. Neither Webb nor the club want the bad publicity that comes with someone being effectively fired so the whole 'retiring' deal is probably just a way of sugercoating that he's not wanted.

Gasneir wouldn't have got a payout, he was walking away from the rest of his contract.
I do believe the only difference in "Carl Webb has today announced his immediate retirement" and Gasnier's presser is when the retirement takes effect. Doesn't that statement indicate Webb is walking away from his contract? People run with too many assumptions on here.

That is a nice view but what foundation is your assumption based on?

I'm basing the assumption on that it seems it's pretty clear that he's not rated by coaching staff given he's only played a couple of first grade games for us, and in games he has played he's only been given a limited amount of minutes.

But anyway that's not the point. I was merely pointing out in response to Ratchy and Poupou's posts that as he has a contract for next year, his decision to retire MAY result in a payout towards him, and that WOULD count under the 2012 salary cap. Otherwise you'd just stick it out, train half arsed, and earn your guarenteed salary.

Seems pretty clear to me that under those same circumstances Webb got fed up trying to fight his way back into top grade and finally realised he just can't cut it any more so wants to now go off and try boxing. Funny how assumptions can vary so much when there is no foundation other than speculation.

It is, however, a little bit funny that all of these players (bar Chris Hicks) have lacked the motivation to keep fighting for a first grade spot and eventually given up the fight. If it was just Webb, your assumption is as good as anyone elses.
