All Blacks star accused of assault
From correspondents in Auckland
January 12, 2005
NEW Zealand police are investigating a complaint by a man who claims All Blacks rugby star Carlos Spencer assaulted him at a bar on the weekend.
Police in the North Island city of Tauranga said they had received the complaint from a local man after an altercation with the high-profile player.
"There's been an allegation of assault made against Carlos Spencer. It is purely an allegation at this stage and we will be following it up," Senior Sergeant Glenn Saunders told the New Zealand Herald.
Snr Sgt Saunders told AAP today that police were speaking with witnesses in Tauranga and would be interviewing others in Auckland this weekend.
He said the accused rugby player would then be interviewed about the incident, most probably on the following Monday.
"It's like any inquiry, we don't go rushing out and grab the suspect and speak to him before we get the various accounts of what happened."
The Herald reported that at the time of the incident Spencer had been with some other All Blacks at the opening of The Home Bar in Tauranga which is partly owned by a former New Zealand rugby player.
Spencer has played 35 rugby tests for New Zealand since 1997 and is the country's third-highest point scorer. He has often led the team haka before international matches.
