I dont reckon, though many would probably disagree with us, AuckMel.
He can have lapses on defense & be too reckless, but when he's on top of his game, noone can weave the same kind of magic. Its so good to watch.

He's pretty good, however 18 months ago I would have said the same about Mertehns and look where he is now. Form fluctuates too easially.

When he's good-He's good but when he's bad (Bedisloe Cup match number 2 & the world cup semi) he's simply dreadfull.He's never been consistant.
Spencer in his prime looks like a schoolboy compared to Mehrtens in his prime.

Correct Ripper. Spencer still went alright that night.

Merhtens is a steady as she goes player, a tactician, Spencer is more a line breaker or puts the ball onto the chest of a player going through a hole.

When he's on, which he usually is when the pack rolls forward, he's the best in the world. Wilkinson can drop kick all he wants, he can't do half the stuff Spencer does on a regular basis.

Spencer would have to be the worst defencive %/8 in the game. Murtz is bad but not as bad as him.
Spencers kicking is shit both in play and goal kicking.
He is a good suport player most of the time he is backin up when sombody makes a brake. But that is all.

Disagree completely KKF. Andrew Mehrtens is the worst defensive five eighth.

He can punt the ball okay, and he's not in the All Blacks for his goal kicking. I'm pretty sure Carter will be there potting goals.

I was wondering about it too, until I remembered its something I did last year in Club Rugby

Basically I punted it to there FB, who in return punted it back to me and gave me and the rest of the backs shitloads of space to work with.

Wilkinson doesnt ''tackle'', he just runs up and shoulder barges them. Caleb Ralph could probaly tackle better

I might cop a bit of flack for this, but I've been thinking about Carlos and his All Black future lately. I think that he should be used at fullback. That's not to say that he necessarily has to stay in the role, but I'd like to see him start from there.

He's fantastic in broken play, has a good clearning punt and enough flair to form a new lethal combination with Doug, Joe et all. He played there v Australia for the NZ Maori a few years ago, and had a blinder

You talking about Grant Fox Oz? I think he was a bit more consistent then Spencer.

Personally I can't stand Spencer and Mehrt's of course being one of the Crusaders is a favourite, they are two totally different players however.
I agree with what Iafeta said, a lot of people don't appreciate Mehrt's game intelligence, the other thing about Spencer is that I don't think he's a very good TEAM player. He wants all the glory, he wants to look good which imo is why he does things that can either be fantastical or extremely stoopid.
think Carter is looking good for the future and seems to be a bit more reliable.

BTW that one bad pass at WC imo was the straw Ripper ;-)
