Carney and His Titans Contract

There is a lot of talk around on these forums re Carney getting out of his Gold Coast contract. The only way that will happen is if the Titans release him from it. Our club would not be able to pay his contract out even if the Titans would allow that (and I doubt very much that they would) Our club has stated that we are close to our cap now, Carney would not be factored into that, so unless he gets the release and plays for much less than he could command it won’t happen. I’m not sure how long he has signed for I think 3 years, but his only other option would be to do a Gorden Tallis and sit it out. I don’t think he would do that. So realistically the only way he can stay is for the Titans to release him, that may be possible if they look at it as not wanting a player that doesn’t want to be there, and for him to play here for peanuts. However even if all that came about, being a new team and him being their high profile signing, I think they will hang on to him for grim death.

He ain't their high profile signing, that would be Prince or Bailey.

Yes it's more then likely he'll leave and move onto the GC but if a player expresses disinterest in fufilling a contract then quite often a club wil lgrant a release, i've seen higher profile players have this happened to them.

I'm just gonna enjoy him while he is here, whether that is 1 year or perhaps more. All i know is that i think he is regretting signing with the coast so soon.

But surely they'd see him as a risk of maybe throwing a few games to get his point across, wouldn't they?

Carney is a big, big larrikin but is also the ultimate professional. He wouldn't consider doing such a thing.

If he has that lack of integrity in him I wouldnt want him in the first place.

He nor any NRL player would or should do that.

And I disagree about him being their high profile signing RBK by many he is rated the best winger in the game, him and Bailey are definately their two big signings to give their side credibility.

I didn't say he would do it, but I'm saying wouldn't the Titan's management, or any other team for that matter, be running the risk of a player throwing a game or two here or there if they don't want to be at the club? I'm not saying that Carney would do that, all I'm saying is wouldn't that thought be crossing the Titan's minds?

It's possible that they might think that, I did mention that in my original post, however I think Carney is professional enough that he wouldn't "not put in for them" The big sticking point is the cost to our cap if it were at all possible, Carney is an international, and as such would command a healthy contract. Have to say RABK that I would consider him being a high profile signing, he is rated as the best in the world in his position.

Has any of the talk of wanting out of his Titans contract actually come from Brian Carney? Is it more wishful thinking from our part?

He won't sit it out. He wants a release because he wants to stay with the Knights, so if the Knights don't want him then he'll go to the Gold Coast.

And the Knights will be able to afford him next year. We could this year, and the Knights haven't signed anyone for next year yet and could lose a few players - K Gidley, Smith, Davico, Quinn, Carmont. So the club will be able to afford him easily.

What makes you think the Gold Coast are going to release him? They would have to be nuts! They have recruited very well so far - they aren't about to release a Great Britain Rep player...

The Knights have already said they will be struggling to retain Kidley. They wouldn't be paying Carney anything like his value this year, he is just using us to mark time before the Titans come in, at least that was the original intention. Smith, Carmont, Davico, and to a lesser extent Quinn would be on base payments, Davico is on match payments. Carney would be commanding big dollars next year. They have also just up graded Mullens contract for three years, Buderus was due to get an upgrade on his next year as well, he re-signed for less last time with upgrades included.

Gold Coast wont release him regardless.
I haven't yet heard Carney say "I dont want to play for the Titans".
Newcastle have already invested elsewhere and both parties already know this.
All talk is pure gossip which nothing will come of it.
Just because a player is playing well and enjoying their time with another team doesn't mean anything.

Carney probably wants to stay at Newcastle but it's not up to him. If Knights were to keep him it rests in the hands of Gold Coast management.
