Carney comeback set for Saturday

Canberra Raiders star Todd Carney is poised to make his controversial return to rugby league on Saturday. The Raiders did not name Carney in any grade yesterday, but The Canberra Times understands Carney is likely to join the Premier League squad, which plays the Newcastle Knights at Canberra Stadium on Saturday.
Carney has been suspended without pay since police charged him with three offences after a high-speed pursuit in Bruce on May 18.
He was sentenced to 200 hours community service in the ACT Magistrates Court last week.
The Raiders have put Carney on a rehabilitation plan, including a total alcohol ban, and the Raiders board met last night to discuss his progress. Raiders coach Neil Henry will meet with Carney this morning to talk about his immediate playing future.
Carney will start his community service tomorrow, working with The Salvation Army.
"We need to make sure that's set in place before he can play football and whether or not he comes back into full-time training," Henry said. "He's a possibility to play lower grades this weekend ... he definitely won't be a consideration for first grade this weekend."
A Raiders spokesman said Carney's psychologist had recommended the 21-year-old was ready to return.
Meanwhile, Raiders general manager Don Furner said the club would look to secure its senior halves during the next off-season, with Carney, Michael Dobson and Terry Campese all off-contract at the end of 2008. The Raiders will lose 20-year-old Premier League halfback Josh McCrone to Penrith.

Its a shame to lose Josh, but he was not really part of long term plans for the club, not could we match the $$ the Panthers are offering.

Only saw McCrone once and he was quite impressive. Who knows if he ultimately turns out to be a better prospect than Dobson. Have also been impressed with Nathan Smith at the Panthers this year.

And thus the Penrith 5 year plan begins...

Good luck to you Josh (you may need it). He's a tidy player from the limited times I've seen him. There was no way we were ever able to keep both him and Herbert and I wish him all the best. He's also probably kept Elliott off Carney's back which is a bonus.

Chachi, Do you think Herbert is 1st grade material?
Mate, I honestly haven't seen enough of him to pass judgement on that yet. No big predictions from me but from what I've seen he's got a nice passing game and a neat step. Seems pretty quick and energetic but can fade in and out of games when I've seen him. Being a decent goalkicker doesn't hurt either.

I have to say, I've never seen him dominate a PL game like Carney, Zillman and Goodwin have (in recent times), but that's not to say he hasn't done it at other times or doesn't have it in him.

Now that Dunemann is goneski I'm guessing we'll find out a lot more about how he can run a team in the next few months. I'd say he won't be considered for FG until at least 2009 (barring injury or departure of our other halves of course) but he's certainly one to keep an eye on. There's no doubt IMO he's the reason we only signed Dobbo for one season at this stage.

Raiders board clears Carney to play

June 20, 2007
THE Canberra Raiders board has ended troubled star Todd Carney's suspension and he could return to the playing field as soon as this weekend.
If Carney does play it will be in the second tier premier league competition ahead of a return to the NRL.
His comeback still hangs in the balance, though, with Raiders coaching staff yet to make their final decision ahead of this weekend's round 15.
Carney has been suspended without pay by the Raiders since police charged him with three offences after a high-speed pursuit in the Canberra suburb of Bruce on May 18.
The 21-year-old was sentenced to 200 hours community service in the ACT Magistrates Court last week.
A club spokesman said the board had cleared Carney for an immediate return to the field.
"The board met last night and cleared Todd to return," the spokesman said.
The current Raiders halves pairing of Michael Dobson and Terry Campese have performed admirably in Carney's absence but Carney should force his way back into the starting side once he's available.

A big sigh of relief. 4 or so weeks ago i'd never have imagined it would turn out so well for the club, and better still, the player.

Go do what you do best now Todd. I believe.

Carney gets all-clear to play this Saturday

Form will determine when he makes his NRL comeback, but controversial Canberra Raiders star Todd Carney will return to the rugby league field on Saturday fitter than he's ever been. As predicted in The Canberra Times yesterday, the Raiders board and coaching staff yesterday cleared Carney to make his comeback in Saturday's Premier League match against the Newcastle Knights at Canberra Stadium.
The move was approved by NRL chief executive David Gallop, who attended the Raiders board meeting on Tuesday night.
Carney will begin his 200 hours of community service with The Salvation Army today, part of his sentence after he pleaded guilty in the ACT Magistrates Court to three driving charges resulting from a police pursuit.
Carney's comeback will occur exactly six weeks after his last NRL match, when the Raiders defeated the South Sydney 16-10 on May 12.
Raiders coach Neil Henry predicted Carney would be "rusty" this weekend, but Raiders conditioning coach Sean Edwards said the 21-year-old was physically charged for the return.
"He's looking extremely fit, he's probably trained twice as hard as any other NRL player over the past five weeks," Edwards said.
Carney returned to training with the Raiders' full-time squad yesterday, but he had previously been training with Canberra's Premier League players and doing up to eight individual sessions a week.
"He hasn't spat the dummy, his attitude towards training has been outstanding and I think he'll come back an even better footballer," Edwards said. "I think the fuse has been lit and he's ready to explode.
"He's fitter than I've seen him. He weighs about 89kg and his skinfolds are as low as they've been."
Carney has been undergoing a five-step rehabilitation plan with the Raiders, including a total alcohol ban.
The Raiders board met on Tuesday night to assess his personal development and handed the final decision on Carney's return to Henry.
Gallop, who said troubled Bulldogs star Sonny Bill Williams could benefit from a similar rehabilitation program, backed the Raiders.
"The Raiders board decided to leave the decision up to the coaching staff and I indicated the NRL was comfortable with that," Gallop said.
"From time to time clubs will have issues with alcohol. Where some players get involved in a number of incidents clubs need to think of putting a plan in place.
"While it's early days yet, it appears the plan has worked in relation to Todd."
Henry refused to speculate on when Carney could be recalled to the NRL, but he insisted the young play-maker would not play against the North Queensland Cowboys at Canberra Stadium on Saturday.
"He's satisfied the requirements put on him by the board and management and he's able to be selected again," Henry said.
"So we're looking forward to seeing him back on the park. But he's been out six weeks, so he's going to be a bit rusty. We'll have to be guided by this weekend and his form.
"He's obviously going to give us a bit more depth, so he'll come into consideration [for an NRL return] at some stage."
Raiders general manager Don Furner said the rehabilitation program would continue, but the club had taken advice from Carney's psychologist. "What has hit him hardest is missing the thing he loves the most [football]," Furner said. "The advice from the counsellor was that he get back into the environment he knows best and start training full-time and get back playing. He's done everything we've asked of him to date, so there's no use penalising him further at this stage.
"But he's not through it yet. There's still a long way to go."
SATURDAY

It's good to have him back again. Wonder what we will do with Campo when Carney is finally brought back.

I would hope campo would stay put.

Dobson is the one that should make way for him when he returns. His form has been way too hot and cold

Agreed. Campo has really stood up this year, his line breaking and kicking game have been v impressive, Dobbo is still hot and cold at the mo.

This may sound silly but Carney is not suited to the halfback position , he has thrived in the 5/8 spot and is alot more threatening from there. Before all this Carney and Dobbo compo was looking OK and one that can be built on. in saying this Campo should not be thrown back to PL , he has shown he is a more than capable FG player. I would put Campo to the bench and after 20 min bring him onto field replacing your Jones or Turner, from there he can play at lock ( tongue to 2nd row) and play a simiar role to his 5/8 role. Theres a good article in BL this week about Campo.
