Carney comeback set for Saturday
Chris Wilson
Canberra Raiders star Todd Carney is poised to make his controversial return to rugby league on Saturday. The Raiders did not name Carney in any grade yesterday, but The Canberra Times understands Carney is likely to join the Premier League squad, which plays the Newcastle Knights at Canberra Stadium on Saturday.
Carney has been suspended without pay since police charged him with three offences after a high-speed pursuit in Bruce on May 18.
He was sentenced to 200 hours community service in the ACT Magistrates Court last week.
The Raiders have put Carney on a rehabilitation plan, including a total alcohol ban, and the Raiders board met last night to discuss his progress. Raiders coach Neil Henry will meet with Carney this morning to talk about his immediate playing future.
Carney will start his community service tomorrow, working with The Salvation Army.
"We need to make sure that's set in place before he can play football and whether or not he comes back into full-time training," Henry said. "He's a possibility to play lower grades this weekend ... he definitely won't be a consideration for first grade this weekend."
A Raiders spokesman said Carney's psychologist had recommended the 21-year-old was ready to return.
Meanwhile, Raiders general manager Don Furner said the club would look to secure its senior halves during the next off-season, with Carney, Michael Dobson and Terry Campese all off-contract at the end of 2008. The Raiders will lose 20-year-old Premier League halfback Josh McCrone to Penrith.
