Smith Shooting for Success at Cowboys

Friday, February 9, 2007 - 2:38 PM
Jason Smith has been one of the world’s very best Rugby League players since the 1990’s and while fans continue to flock to grounds to watch the way he mesmerizes his opposition the new Cowboys pivot insists it is he who is in awe of his current team mates, deflecting attention from his own game and singing their praises.

Smith’s arrival in Townsville has led to many fans of the game salivating at the prospect of the veteran five eighth lining up next to current test halfback Johnathan Thurston in what c=is a dream halves combination set to wreak havoc upon the NRL in 2007 and it is a combination which Smith is looking forward to being a part of.

“I am definitely looking forward to it. I have been fortunate enough to play for the Maroons and Australia with some great halves like Ricky Stuart and Allan Langer but the chance to play club football with Johnathan is something I am excited about. We want to get some combinations going with Matthew Bowen to his play excites me.

“We also have a good size forward pack to play behind and having a pack like the one we have should give Johnathan and I plenty of opportunities in attack”.

While Thurston will provide plenty of spark and speed to the halves combination, Smith will provide an astute kicking game, brilliant ball playing and his own unique ability to look like he has an eternity to do anything with the ball in his hands.

The time Smith appears to have with the ball to set up the play is legendary and the man himself admits he is not entirely sure why he appears to have so much of it.

“I’m not sure what it is, and it’s a question that Todd Carney asked me last year at the Raiders, Todd came to me voluntarily but I wasn’t sure myself so I asked Matthew Ellliott.

“Anyway he came back to me with ten smaller things that he thought contributed to it and they included experience, carrying the ball in two hands and giving myself options as well as respect from my opponent. Basically we figured out there are around ten reasons why”.

Having moved on to the Cowboys Smith looked back on his days as a Raider fondly and predicted that despite predictions they will win the spoon this year that the current Raiders side will have quite a bit of success in the years to come.

“I had a couple of good years in Canberra and they were unfortunate that they had a lot of experienced players leave in the one hit, but in a way it will make the young guys coming through into stronger players a lot quicker.

“Four or five of those players in the Canberra side could play for Australia, the two props Michael Weyman and Dane Tilse, Alan Tongue and Todd Carney all have big futures. I can see Todd playing for the Kangaroos whether it’s in the team with Johnathan Thurston or taking him on for the halfback spot. There is certainly a lot of talent at that club”.

When asked about his goals for this year, Smith is adamant that winning the premiership with the Cowboys is what it’s all about in season 2007, and he is feeling ready for the challenge.

“Winning the competition I think is definitely why we train for eleven months of the year, it’s to hold our trophy and to sing our song, to play and win a Grand Final is something every player wants to achieve whether it is your first year or your last”.

While Jason Smith is getting older he feels good about his body and believes it can hold up to the rigours of NRL football, despite having some knee problems at the end of the last season.

“Yeah I had a small operation where I had my knee cleaned out before I left Canberra and it took a bit of time to recover but training is going well.

“I think no matter what age you are the training is hard at this time of year, although it is tapering off a bit as we head into the trials. After you reach 25 the training gets a bit harder but for me it has not really changed since then”.

The payoff from the Cowboys off season training and Smith’s inclusion will most likely be seen during the first round against the Broncos and having gone without a local derby in recent seasons Smith is hyped up for the challenge.

“I am looking forward to that game. I played in a few derbies in England and before that for Parramatta against Penrith and for Canterbury we played some good ones against St.George, but to experience this one against the Broncos with what should be close to a sellout at Suncorp is something I am looking forward to”.

Smith is not telling me anything i didnt know already, but its a nice change to be hearing about outsiders talking up the quality of our players.

If todd reaches potential, he will be an australian half, be it at 5/8th or half. Probably along side Thurston

Carney's future is at 5/8, no doubt in my mind

im inclinde to agree
seeing his running game develop last year was a thing of beauty. Plus he has the ability to fire a quick and accurate long or short ball to a man in space, which is exactly what you need in a 5/8th. Im cautious about his size, in recent times there has been a switch to what would be considered larger 5/8ths, in the likes of barrett, daley, fittler, anasta and so on.

The fact that Trent Barrett was considered a great 5/8 leads me to believe that Carney definitely has rep footy in him...well that and the fact that NSW really has f*** all depth in the halves.

That's not to say Carney isn't a good player - more that he's got an unreal opportunity to make a statement this year if he's up to it.

I think thats the major reason he may well be playing rep footy sooner than most think. I think he is a very good chance of getting a game this year. His major competition doesnt appear strong (Lyon, Gasnier and Finch is about it...)...

Hornby will be there at 5/8, with Finch or Orford at half imo
You're probably right quinny. The fact that Hornby (excellent utility) and Finch (the worst halfback to have represented NSW) are genuine chances says a lot.

Tim Smith could regain some form, but I'm still not convinced about him, and Orford is down there with Kimmorley as far as consistency goes IMO.

I guess Cronk is also a dark horse if Melbourne back up this season while the likes of Lyon and Gasnier are a chance, like Stuart says, but they'll be under immense pressure if they play in the halves (will be interesting).

Sad really. None of these players mentioned is anywhere near the quality a decade ago of Stuart, Langer, Johns, Alexander, Fittler, Daley or Lyons. Ahh the good 'ol days ;-)

Yeah, sorry in my ramblings I was starting to think beyond the NSW thing and was just thinking about the depth of halves in general - but having said that I didn't know that Tim Smith was a Queenslander (although I knew Cronk was).

Not sure why I didn't know that as I probably read it a thousand times in the paper last year!

Anyhoo I guess the point is Carney should be 5/8 for both NSW and Australia. :)

the depth in the halves for the blues is weak indeed
when finch and hornby are talked up as potential gap fillers, you know we are in trouble for halves. If Carney steps up, there is a chance he could make something of himself

first things first, he needs to get his head straight for the raiders and try to nab himself a country origin spot

Good point. Who are our boys up against in the halves for a country rep jersey? Lyon (perhaps), Kidley, Morris(?), Joe Williams, Finch, Hornby, Head, Kimmorley...anyone else??

Depends if Gower keeps his teeth to himself, he might get a chance. Wing has also represented but then Ricky killed his career making him a benchie.

Tilse a rep footballer, I think not.

Odd, he had the same raps on him when he was a Knight. What do you know that the rest of the world doesn't?

As for Carney, he's definitely got a future. I'm biased towards Mullen, who seems to have had more experience at piloting a side around, but he's likely to move to halfback after Johns' retirement - so they shouldn't end up clashing for the same rep jerseys anyway.

Tilse has a rep career in him if he can get on the angry pills abit
for mine he is too placid for a man of his physical presence, he should be putting the fear of god into the opposition with his frame.
