Carney injury is a headache for Canberra but Benji is back

STAR Raiders playmaker Todd Carney will have X-rays today for a possible broken thumb sustained in Saturday night's shock loss to a team comprising players from Brisbane's feeder club and the Redcliffe Queensland Cup outfit.
Should he be sidelined for the opening premiership rounds, it would be a massive blow to Canberra as new coach Neil Henry is still trying to settle on combinations in the other key positions of fullback, halfback and hooker. A number of players were used in each of those positions in Saturday night's trial. Raiders officials conceded that poor handling let their side down but the wooden spoon favourites could have led 18-0 early if a few passes had stuck.
Broncos/Dolphins 18 (D Kent, G Mzembe, R Cullen, N Emmett tries; B McConnell goal) bt Raiders 12 (A Purtell, P Graham tries; M Dobson, T Carney goals) at Dolphin Park, Redcliffe. Crowd: about 4500

Gee, that's not good news for Raider's fans if indeed Carney's thumb is broken. If Carney is out until after the season proper kicks off, who would replace Carney in the side?

the other report said he should be OK.

If he is missing for Rd 1 you'd think it'll be Dobson/Dunemann or Dobson/Withers...

Interesting to see Carney with the goal kicking duties, I thought Dobson would have been first choice after last season.

Carney fracture 'good news'

CANBERRA halfback Todd Carney received good news today, when he was told that he had fractured the index finger of his left hand rather than breaking his thumb.
Carney and his teammates were deflated after losing on Saturday to a Brisbane side consisting primarily of Queensland Cup players, and the results of the half’s x-rays today provided a necessary tonic for the Raiders.

Carney would have been forced to miss a couple of weeks had he broken his thumb, casting doubt on his fitness to play against Manly in the Raiders’ NRL season opener on March 17, but the fracture to his finger means he is unlikely to miss that fixture.

Carney is “more than likely to be right for this weekend”, a Raiders spokesman said today about Canberra’s final pre-season trial against Wests Tigers in Brisbane.
