Carr Coughs Up Another 8 Million

The State government came to the party again yesterday and gave another 8 million dollars to cover the shortfall for stage 1 of the upgrade of EAS. What is disapointing is all the local fed guys then coming out and criticising the donation, trying to get political mileage by saying the money should have gone on roads, or it's a smokescreen to cover up the failed Steelworks projects. These guys give me the sh!ts, Big Bob Baldwin (the main culprit) would do better to consider the fact that his miserable leader has given didley squat. He can argue all he likes about the money is better spent on roads, hospitals and the like, the fact remains that life is also about enjoyment, and relaxation, which the stadium will in some way provide, along with some income to the city in the form of international events being held there. My suggestion to Bob Baldwin is "Get off your fat arse, and start doing something for the community you represent in the form of some good things in life, you were elected to represent ALL the requirements of this region, and that includes providing recreational facilities that are not sub standard, and third world.

I find it sickening that Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra and even Gosford get new stadiums all the time - and we have to go begging bowl in hand to update something built by Sir Robert Askin in the sixties.

Carr is screwing all the brownie points he can out of this - but none of them deserve credit for giving us something that is 20 years overdue.

Baldwin is useless, he has done diddly squat for our community in the time he has been elected.
All we ever hear from the useless twat is drivel, piss him off.

I wasn't going to vote for liberal anyway. But after what howard has done by not giving the money he IMO should to help upgrade EAS. There is no way he'll ever get my vote.

Austeel sends $5b mill offshore

as found abcnews.com

Austeel says it is likely go offshore with a $5 billion steel mill after deciding not to go ahead with the project in the Hunter Valley.

The development would have created more than 1,000 permanent jobs

Austeel has been involved in a legal wrangle with the New South Wales Government, accusing it of not honouring a commitment to provide land and infrastructure for the mill on a site at Tomago, north of Newcastle.

Chief executive officer John Elmore says company had been seeking more than $1 billion in compensation from the Government but has now dropped its legal action and will pull the development out of New South Wales.

"We're not in the business of suing Governments," Mr Elmore said.

"We're here to build a steel mill.

"We pushed the Government as hard as we could [but] it's become painfully evident that this Government is not going to honour its obligation."

Mr Elmore says the way Austeel has been treated by the Government sends a poor message to international investors looking to put money into New South Wales.

Full points the Labor Government on this one. Well done indeed

It is disappointing that the Federal Government doesn't want to make a contribution. They seem to see the political stupidity of pumping funds into a safe seat - in doing so they only make the electorates in and around the Hunter very displeased with the Liberal Party.

I think it is a shame though, especially given I actually think John Howard is a decent Prime Minister. In my short years I can remember only dud Prime Ministers who didn't fill me with any confidence in their abilities to run the country. Howard has done a solid job, a Buderus-style job, unseen and unrewarded.

But, and it's a big "but", I'm very disappointed in the Government's decision to ignore the population in and around Newcastle. By my reckoning, he rules out winning any seat in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, stretching into Maitland and Paterson. Bob Baldwin must be sweating a bit about his future, especially in such a shakey seat. Three years, still with no action by the Government, may see Baldwin relegated to a non-parliamentary job.

For all my disappointments with the Carr Government, Bob Carr's arrogance, and his failures to deliver on a football-field long pledge-list - to his credit he has delivered with regards to the stadium. The initial $23.6 million came on the eve of an election, and this announcement comes during discontent about his failure to deliver the new shipping terminal (which gets me cranky too), but at least he delivered.

Not happy John, and this is coming from a voter satsified with your overall performance in the Prime Ministerial position. :(

The Federal Government didn't help with Suncorp Stadium, that was all paid for from the QLD State Government.

This morning I was watching Sunrise (god I hate being up early enough to watch that on my days off), but they were talking about how the Federal government said that they would give some large amount in the millions (can't remember the figure) to go towards redevelopment of Mount Panorama.

Guess what happened? The state government has given their money, (and donated again since I believe) while they are still waiting to see the cash come from the federal government.

Doesn't that sound a little familiar???

Apparently they have already pulled down pit lane, but don't have the funding to complete the job, and if they don't get the funding from the Federal government they will have to cancel the great race this year.

David Koch said that he was going to speak to whoever the minister that involved with it is, and find out why the federal government hasn't coughed up the money that they promised.

I think the feds should stop saying that they are going to put money into projects like these if they aren't going to cough up the dough, ok fair enough there are other things that others would deem to be more important, but it is pathetic that they say that they will do it, but then never come around to doing it!! It is bloody annoying!!!

I understand that and it would be good if the state paid for ours... but the fact reamins that he said he put in the other half if that state did. I have never liked John Howard, never.

Good points,

I look at it two ways, surely the Knights, a successful NRL club with the potential of raising huge dollars ins sponsorship and merchandising would be able to pay there own way at some stage. For 16 Years they have been breaking even or losing money. What is so hard about making this thing a going concern. I would love to own the club, it is a licence to print money.

On the other hand, we do get the raw end of the deal as far as any funding is concerned. I would wager that the Federal Goverment has spent more money shipping troops off to fight in stupid wars that it has spent in Newcastle. That is a disgrace, the government is for the people.

You make it sound so easy. ;-)

The lack of a leagues club doesn't help, neither does the dodgy facilities at the stadium.
It is hoped that the new stadium will finally see the Knights push well into the black, for the first time in history.

The Knights, for all their popularity in Newcastle, still struggle financially - they have only sponsors and gate-takings as real sources of finances.
