At the start of the year, if you were to run a finger over the Rabbitohs squad and look for a weakness, most people would have probably said “the centres” and possibly halves depth. Now anyone who had seen Luke Keary play in NYC knew the halves were sorted but even after the prodigal son, Beau Champion, returning home the centres still looked a shaky proposition.
However!! I was just filling out the Daily Telecrap fan survey and I have to say that I was disappointed that Bryson Goodwin was not listed as an option for “Best Value Buy of 2013”. While there may have been some better buys I would say Goodwin is the best value buy of the season by the proverbial country mile. On Friday night Goodwin did what no other centre has done this year and absolutely owned Jamie Lyon… I should correct that and say no other centre but himself because he did it in round 7 as well! What an awesome pick up he has been and such a consistent, solid performer. I am happy to throw my hand in the air and say I thought he was destined for the Bears and the odd injury cover game on the wing. I thought when Madge picked him at centre he was of fhis tree. Glad to be wrong on that one.
Then to complete my joy what about young Dylan Walker on the other side of the paddock applying the same deed of title ownership to Matai on Friday night. Matai walked off the paddock with “Owned by Walker” stamped firmly on his corn-rowed head. This kid is a revelation, and as Phil “my opinion is more important than the football” Gould correctly said in commentary, “too good for NYC, too good for NSW cup and now too good for Matai”. And only 18! If not for a late start to the season and one George Burgess this kid is the best rookie in the comp. The next 15 years in red and green look bright for this kid
Madge has done a wonderful job this year in turning this team into just that… a complete football team. A lot was said about how well Reynolds and Luke controlled the game and how beneficial the return of Inglis and Sutton was to the team was but for mine the efforts of our centres in shutting down arguably the most potent attacking outfit in the competition was the X factor for us on Friday night, we frustrated tham into defeat.
PS. Also great to see one of the centres I thought wasn’t up to par in Dylan Farrell play so well against the Eagles. His defence, both in terms of his defensive reads and extra effort in defence were great on Friday and his icing on the cake try was just reward for his contribution. I could watch his hit on the aptly nicknamed snake Brett Stewart a thousand times over and cheer no less. He has responded to his dumping to the Bears like a champion…the Dragons have snared a good one here and it’s a sign of the strength of this team that we are able to let him go.
