yes but channel 9 only broadcasts in SD. They would need to switch 9 to HD - and I am not sure of the technicalities but I recall hearing it is not that easy. Someone may correct me on that.

I find it amazing that Nines HD channel is GEM and they show old movies all day. What is the f**king point?

I heard on Talkin' Sport that the reason Nine don't broadcast in HD is that Channel 9 gives them the biggest audience reach (not everyone has digital) so they show the footy there.

However isn't that redundant now that the analog signal has been switched off?

not exactly. there reasoning is that gem can't be broadcast to as much of the population as the main channel can, so by broadcasting on their main channel their ratings potential increases by about 10%. their actions though end up costing them as it takes away from other viewers that can't watch their crap def pic. it also doesn't help when they play two of their games on delay in that poor quality. I know plenty of people who will wait for those games to be on fox as they would rather wait a bit longer to see them in HD if they want to see them at all.

because they don't want to be wasting their resources doubling up. 9 goes to a larger audience so they play nrl on there. gem is used to broadcast things that tap into a different market segment.
