Marshall Chalk will remain in the lime green until at least the end of 2008, after signing a new two year deal with the Canberra Raiders today.
Chalk has been a sensation for the Raiders in 2006, and his impressive move from the backline to the back row has allowed him to secure his future with the club until at least the end of the 2008 season.
After an iconic four try effort in his second NRL match in 2004 Chalk has struggled to break into first grade playing fullback, due to the form of Raiders skipper Clinton Schifcofske, but his move to the back row has him one of the first players picked each week in the current Raiders line-up.
Chalk said he is happy to be remaining in Canberra for the next two years, but at the same time is still concentrating on the Raiders making it through to the finals this year.
“It’s great to have my future sorted out and I can just concentrate on playing good footy,” Chalk said. “We still have a job to do this year and I’m really enjoying playing first grade at the moment.”
Chalk said staying with the Raiders is something that he has wanted all along, and his decision was based around support from those close to him.
“I never really wanted to leave Canberra so I’m glad that I have been offered the chance to stay,” he said. “I spoke with my family and friends and they agreed it was the right thing for my football career.”
Raiders general manager Don Furner said Chalk’s form has warranted the new deal, and he looked forward to seeing Chalk continue his rapid development in the Raiders back row.
“Marshall’s form has done the talking this year and we had no choice but to re-sign him,” Furner said. “He has been one of the standouts in the team since shifting to the back row and we look forward to him getting even better.”

Fantastic news. Really really expected him to go, especially with the Titans in the market.

I still think he is best utilised in the centres/wing but as long as he's in the 17 he's a contributor... well done

really thickos? I was pretty confident he'd stay, especially after reading his comments in the Canberra Times in more than one interview. He never looked like he wanted to go.

Good news:)

yea true Azz ... once Elliott announced he was leaving you could see the change in Chalky's attitude

Seriously ... great news ... every club needs someone who can chalk up tries as well as save them and be rubbed off the blackboard from one position and chalked into another ... well you know what I mean.

GO CHALKY .. one of my favourite players.

Nice pun Bay...

good work management. There would have been an uproar if he left.

Well this was my thinking last year... when there was an article in some Qld paper about the Titans targetting Chalk. The fact a contract offer was delayed too made me think he was going. I agree though, the more recent media made it seem like he was going to stay.

Those puns are tragic, bay. Come up with some better ones.

how about Chalky and Purtells ability to defend is like chalk and cheese

I think this deserves a thread of its own

Great news although disappointed to read that they see him as a forward. He is more than good enough to be a starter in our backline and would of loved to have seen him in the centres this weekend.

Better only because it is so true. That one is so cliche now that even I can think it up. And anyway, Purtell should be slammed for his attack if anything.

I also thought he was gone, absolutely ecstatic that he is staying. Imagine if we had him on one wing and Best on the other.

You could chalk us up as the best backline in the league. (Just for you bay - I was tossing up adding "that would be one howell of a backline", but Id rather not see Howell involved).

Great news. IMO he's the ultimate utility that isn't out of place in the starting 13 either.

Earlier this year I also thought he was 100-1 to stay after reading a few articles and quotes. Just goes to show you not to believe a lot of stuff you read until it actually happens.

The Crookwell Witch wants it known that this signing has significant positive vibes for the future of the "Raiders" both in premiership aspirations and the long term viability of the team.
