Charge-downs off a field goal attempt

I'd prefer all charge down attempts to not count as 6 again. A charge down is a good defensive play, mixed with a failure in attack (stand deep enough and you will never be charged down).

You shouldn't get rewarded for a f**k up.

If they made this change though, they would then need to also enfoce offside players who attempt to charge down

100% agree
Why should any team be rewarded for failing to get a clean kick away?

FWIW - raiders were way offside for the charge downs and Austin was in front of Rapana for his try, the cowboys deservedly won that game.

Hmmmmm
I think maybe some kind of metre based criteria would help, not unlike the 40-20 attempts.
Shoot for a FG inside the 30 and you don't get it back if its blocked.
Shoot from within the 30 and 40 = get one more tackle if it is blocked and returned to you.
Shoot from outside the 40 and if its blocked you can go again for 6 more tackles.

That just a crappy brainwave I had, I have to say though that it really is a hiding to nothing when you just keep charging the ball down.
There was an air of inevitability to what occurred in Canberra yesterday.

I didn't think Austin was offside, but he should have been binned for his professional foul before half time.

The kick ahead happened pretty much right in front of me, i am all but certain he was offside, at least a metre..

as for the professional foul, if he'd have been sin binned it wouldnt have shocked me, but i do think they got that right, i dont think it was egregious enough to deserve 10 in the bin, it was a standard ruck penalty really

Fair enough. Game was a classic example of decisions evening out and the one point result was an apt one.

On the other hand why should any team be rewarded for essentially knocking on in the charge down? It's the risk you take

I think you've got to make allowances for the defence to make game changing plays.
I dont see charge downs having anything at all to do with knock ons, christ half the time on charge downs it doesnt even hit the defenders hands

The attacking side of the ball gets a lot advantages in todays game, the NRL wants a fast, open, free flowing game with lots of points, and they construct the rules, ruck etc to aid this goal, let the pendulum swing a little bit back the other way and give the defence a way to create a big momentum swining play
