The Other day I rang the Salvos asking them to come and pick up a couch and give it to a needy family, The delivary drivers were humming and harring whether they should collect the couch, eventually they did so. I Went to the store close to me instead giving it to a needy family they where selling it. Is this normal practice by these charities.

That's exactly what they do. We have the big Salvos down the road from us at Tempe and i often take stuff down to them when i clean out stuff but i have found them now so fussy about what they take, somethings i can understand as they end up getting a lot of crap and rubbish they can't sell but i had a beautiful doona, there was nothing wrong with it, i just found it to heavy at night and it was laundered and in its original plastic storage package but the gruff guy there taking donations said we don't take stuff like that so i ended up giving it away to a friend who appreciated it.
But yes, any lounge, tables, desks, wardrobes etc that are in good condition they re sell through their shops.

In my experience it's how they raise their funds. The goods they sell at their outlets are generally very cheap, so in effect they can help needy families.

Yep, that's how it works. They sell the stuff and the idea is to use those funds to help needy families. Another thing to keep in mind is that they have to pay for the disposal if the stuff doesn't sell. This is why they might seem "fussy". I know someone who did some volunteering there and you'd be shocked how much absolute garbage people try to donate, that just goes straight into the bin.

Exactly, you should see some of the junk dumped outside their stores sometime out of hours, I have a rule of thumb in the house when i do a clean up /clean out, Stuff straight for the garbage and stuff for the cats which are clean and i know someone else would get use out of ( cats because we used to take it the cat protection society when they had their op shop in Enmore but they don't have one anymore but now i take it to the Salvos at Tempe ) i would take it to the Salvos at Crown St Surry Hills as i know a couple of people who work there but parking to drop stuff is almost impossible.

Funny this thread popped up yesterday, i just helped our neighbour carry out a lounge to the street while they wait for the Salvos to come and pick it up.
