Cheerio cheerleaders as Rabbitohs dump bunny girls

TWO years after rugby league's image with women hit an all-time low, the code's most traditional club will be the first to do away with scantily-clad cheergirls at football games this season, while another will include cheerboys for the first time.

South Sydney fans will be entertained by beats and drums instead of pleats and pompoms at home games this year as the foundation club replaces the traditional primped and perky all-female cheers quad with Australian dance legend Dein Perry, producer of Tap Dogs, Australian highest grossing theatre export, and the 2000 Sydney Olympics Opening Ceremony.

Perry will hold open auditions for a Rabbitohs Drum Squad this month in an attempt to make home games more family-friendly and "show people that the mould of traditional entertainment at the footy can be broken".

A Newcastle boy who made tap dancing manly again, Perry's connection with the Rabbitohs co-owner and executive chairman, Peter Holmes a Court, began five years ago with Tap Dogs' first international foray to the Edinburgh Festival.

"The tribalism of rugby league and the visceral nature of the game" made drumming a perfect fit for match days, Mr Holmes a Court said.

"Nobody in Australia does rhythm like Dein and we're blessed to find a dance choreographer who is a league nut."

The club's cheerleaders would still be involved in its corporate hospitality program and the mixed-sex drummers would have a broader appeal of their own, he said.
"I don't think anyone comes to a game just to look at a little bit of cleavage. No one will miss what we had … because there will be so much more. I think rugby league can appeal to people who aren't traditional supporters. … With us and other teams changing their game-day experience, it will broaden the audience."

At the Parramatta Eels, cheerleaders will be joined by three blokes this season in another rugby league first - and their pouty, dance-based routines replaced by athletic tossing, tumbling and tricks.

It is another example of rugby league's determination to reach beyond its core audience of young men who drink beer and yell, "Get 'em onside!" Said Eels cheerleading coach Melissa McKenzie: "This team appeals to mothers and daughters and kids, too."
The NSW Minister for Sports, Sandra Nori, said it was smart marketing by both clubs and it would be good for rugby league.

The academic Catharine Lumby, who was hired as a consultant by the NRL in 2004 after damaging allegations of sexual misconduct against the Bulldogs clubs, said cheerleaders were not to blame for the game's blokey image and player behaviour issues. "But there is an issue of taste there. Some people would prefer to see women in short skirts at the ballet, but there you go."

Only one AFL team - the Adelaide Crows - still has cheerleaders. Others such as the Carlton Bluebirds and the Sydney Swanettes are distant memories. END

i don't think i'd notice terribly much if they buggered off cheerleaders (this despite my gf being one, lol). I'm usually too focused on the match to worry about them.

That'd be incorrect. As mentioned, the Dragons had a bloke as one of the cheerleaders a couple of seasons ago. He copped heaps but he was the trail blazer. Ahead of his time.

can't blame souths.

let's face it. why would you have watched souths games over the last 16 seasons?

the cheerleaders would have been better to watch than the team.

Couldn't they just pay the girls for the 3 wins a year?

We'll see! 1st and Last Round losses to Souths coming up for the Roosters to cap off their 100th year- back to normality for them.

why not kit them out in jerseys & usher them onto the field?

they would have added some starch to the defence in seasons past.

I dont think its such a bad idea, something different at least. As good as cheergirls are (most of them) when youre sitting up in the stands its not like youre getting a good perv anyway, and nobody cares what theyre cheering about. So why not have a drummer or 20 put on a show instead, i imagine it would get the crowd more into it and wake them up if its a dull game.

Good work souths.

As for Cheerboys..... no thanks.

I find that at any game i've been to....the cheerleaders are annoying....they sit in front of you do there gymnastic exercise while your trying to watch the game so that you can't see anything....i don't think it will make a difference having boy cheerleaders think they will be just as annoying...i wish they would do away with the whole concept that the teams need em....

I hope every club takes up Parramatta's lead and has cheerboys. I read that the Titans are thinking are maybe having them too.

Dein Perry Joins Rabbitohs as Game Day and Special Events Producer

The South Sydney Rabbitohs will be taking game day entertainment in a new direction and to a new level in 2007 with Dein Perry now taking the role of Game Day and Special Events Producer.

Dein is one of the most respected figures in the entertainment industry and is regarded as the premier choreographer in the country.

Dein’s most famous work has been directing and choreographing Tap Dogs, Australia’s highest grossing theatre production of all time, in over 300 cities worldwide, as well as choreographing the 2000 Sydney Olympics Opening Ceremony. Dein won the Olivier Award for Best Choreographer in 1995 and 1996, the youngest ever recipient of the award. He has received four Mo Awards for Best Dance Performer of the Year, and has won two Australian Green Room Awards for Best Supporting Role and Best Original Choreography. He also received the Choreography Award at the Australian Dance Awards in 1998, a New York Drama Desk nomination and a New York Obie Award.
Dein will be producing the game day entertainment for Rabbitohs home games as well as producing the Rabbitohs’ big events such as the annual Red and Green Ball and Season Launch.

“It’s very exciting times at the Rabbitohs and I’m glad I can play a part in bringing the best entertainment to the Rabbitohs Members and fans,” Mr Perry said.
“The Rabbitohs have expressed to me that they want to make each and every home game an event not to be missed and that is what we will be endeavouring to do.
“We have some innovative ideas for the upcoming season so we urge all Rabbitohs fans to get out to the games this year and enjoy a full day of entertainment along with some fantastic football action on the field.”

Rabbitohs Executive Chairman Peter Holmes à Court said: “I’ve had the honour of working with Dein for five years taking Tap Dogs to the world, and I’m rapped to be able to have him reinvent our game days.

“Nobody in Australia does rhythm like Dein and were blessed to find a dance choreographer who is a League nut.”

The first initiative is the introduction of a Rabbitohs Drum Squad for games. The Drum Squad will entertain the crowd with their rhythmic beats throughout the game and during the breaks on game day. Dein Perry will be joined by his long time drumming collaborator Joe Accaria in putting together the Rabbitohs Drum Squad

“The Rabbitohs, Joe and I want to do things differently and uniquely, and we think the Drum Squad will help create an electric atmosphere at the games,” Mr Perry explained.
“We’re looking for young, energetic, healthy, enthusiastic and fit drummers with a good sense of movement to join our squad and we will be holding auditions in February to find the best talent that Sydney has to offer.

“It’s a chance for them to show their talents to thousands of people every week and we can show people that the mould of traditional entertainment at the footy can be broken. We need people who are great drummers that can move as well with high energy!”

Auditions for the Rabbitohs Drum Squad will be held on Monday 12 February at 6pm sharp at South Sydney Leagues Club, 265 Chalmers St in Redfern. To book your spot for the auditions please email Tiffany Normand at [email protected] or call Tiffany on (02) 8306 9912. Drums will be supplied for the audition. Just bring yourself, your energy and your rhythm! END

Well it sounds entertaining although the bit in bold doesn't excite me. Drumming during the game???  FFS I hope not!

BTW I really hope we get some crowds because it ain't going to sound too good playing to 10,000 scattered fans.
