Wilson is paid to write opinion IE not please everybody. And she seems to suck them in every week. Generally articles that are "unpopular"* work just as well as "popular" ones for her employers as they stimulate the most debate and provoke people to become emotionally attached to her articles or opinion (see Andrew Bolt). People read because they hate just as much as for admiration. When she writes something divisive it "pleases" both groups of readers - those that want to pat her back and those who want to kick her arse.
I bet there are people on this thread that read her stuff every week. I admit that I read her maybe 1-2 times a year (I haven't read this article though). I saw one post say that she writes an article about "the worst year for the NRL" - or similar - at least once a year. How the hell do people know that if they haven't been consistently reading her for years on end?
The answer to that is simple. People love a gripe, and she provides it. They didn't give her the inside back cover on saturday by accident, they gave it to her because people can't get enough of a sh**fight and they sell content off the back of her. Love or hate, they read her gear every saturday. She gets her oxygen from places like this, just as much from those that like her. As soon as she writes something people start posting.
* I say unpopular in content only. Sh**loads of people read her paper. Popularity in terms of exposure isn't an issue for them.
